INSCRIBED on front pastedown by Dreer ("Dave . Best wishes Herman Dreer"). All of the major characters in this romantic novel appear to be white. Dreer, an African American, was born in Washington, D.C. in 1888, graduated Magna Cum Laude at Bowdoin College around 1910, taught for a few years at Virginia Theological Seminary and College (where he also met and married his wife, was ordained a Baptist minister and earned a Master's degree), before moving to St. Louis where he taught and was an administrator at Sumner High School and later at Stowe Teachers College until he retired in 1959. He was strongly committed to the study and promotion of African American history. Dreer was also an active Baptist minister and committed to his fraternity (Omega Psi Phi) for which he compiled the first history. He spent much of the rest of his life in St. Louis. Dreer wrote two novels: "The Immediate Jewel of His Soul" in 1919 and this book 39 years later.
