First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good Minus. "Puck" (illustrator). 1st Edition. Extremely rare First Edition (1909 on Title Page). I've provided photographs of the covers (there is light corner rub-through, edges are in very good condition). I've also turned over all 373 pages. So here is a very specific, compulsive description. On the title page it states 'With 24 Illustrations In Color, After The Designs By "Puck".' This book has only 23 of these illustrations. The one facing page 64 is missing. Of the remaining 23, I found the following issues: 2 illustration pages, including the frontispiece have a 1" x 1/4" inch stain off one edge far away from the illustration, one illustration page has a 2 inch tear off its middle edge, with 3/4's of an inch of that tear reaching into the illustration itself. One other illustration has three small tears off its middle edge ranging from 1/8th to 1/2 an inch, none reaching anywhere near the illustration. One illustration page has a 3/4 inch tear off its bottom edge, also far away from the illustration. There are three other illustrations which have partly lifted up from the binding. One off the bottom edge going up 2 1/2 inches, a second also off the bottom edge going up 1 1/2 inches, and a third going up 1 inch off the bottom edge and 1 1/2 inches off the top. All three are otherwise well-bound. There is also one illustration, the last in the book, which together with the page of text preceding it, has detached from the book's binding. It is attached to the preceding page, but it's slightly separated from it off the bottom edge going up 2 inches. It also has a tiny tear and crease adjacent to those 2 inches. The illustration pages are mostly clean. A few have a couple of spots of soiling and several others have mild handling soiling, maybe a fingerprint or something like that. That covers the illustrations. The book is decently bound. Beside the two detached pages I just referenced there is only one other page in the book that is detached. Between the front cover and the first front end paper there is the slightest space (no webbing showing) visible at a few points along the juncture, but only if you pull the cover upwards where there is just the slightest amount of give. So the front cover is quite solidly bound. The binding of the rear cover is very solid, no spaces, no issues. You can see five points at the junctures of the pages where the bindings are. There are probably a dozen are so instances, other than with the illustrations, where off the bottom or the top edge, a page or small gathering of pages has detached from one of the five bindings. In a few of these instances two of the five bindings (one gathering is 10 pages and the detachment goes down 4 inches). The binding is otherwise still quite solid in all of these instances. There are couple of cases where there is a space between two opposing pages, but neither of those pages is loose or detached. I counted four text pages with a tear off an edge, a 1/4, a 1/2, 1, and 1 1/2 inches in length. There may be a few other tears that I missed. There are five pages with a red discoloration off the bottom edge, 1/4" x 1/4 inch. There are three consecutive pages with a small hole a little up from the bottom edge, about 1/8th of an inch. There are probably a dozen or so corner creases, and there is one tiny loss of paper at a corner. There are around 25 pages or so with some small stains. There are also a good number of pages that have light handling soiling, like a fingerprint. There are a lot of pages that don't have handling soiling. Some other positives: There are no markings or attachments, and no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in this book. That's a fine-tooth comb condition description. And a hell of a discount.
