Bound in linen patterned with a detail from a lithograph 'Trees and Fields' by Peter Takal. Light 'cup' ring to front board. Light general shelf wear. Small stain on front pastedown; else clean, tight and vg condition. Three hundred and fifty copies, printing on Charing Handmade, were set aside for friends of the author. This is copy number 145. Inscribed and signed on the half title page by Senator McCarthy. This is the twenty-second edition of the North Central Christmas book, 'And Time Began', containing a selection of poems by former five-time presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy, the congressman, and later, senator from Minnesota. This book was published in 1968, the year McCarthy challenged the incumbent president, Lyndon Johnson, for the nomination of the Democratic party. One wonders how the candidate found time to write these verses and arrange for them to be published.
