Laurence Olivier was in the cast of the first production at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in 1939.Presentation copy from the author, inscribed by him on the front free endpaper: ''For the Mistress of Heytesbury and the mother of George, from Sam. First Visit: June, 1939.'' The recipient is Hester Sassoon (née Gatty) who had married Siegfried Sassoon in 1933 and given birth to George in 1936. After their first meeting in 1921 Behrman and Sassoon enjoyed a long-lasting friendship. On the front pastedown is Siegfried Sassoon's small monogram bookplate.Fine in near-fine dustwrapper.
