Full Leather. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Limited Numbered Edition. A handsome Limited Numbered Edition signed by the author on the limitation page and numbered 223 of only 350 Limited Edition copies. Author's first book. In fine black leather with gold titling, speckled page edges and bound-in silk bookmark, the book is in fine unread condition, solid and the pages appear untouched. Includes the acetate dust-jacket, now become rare with these editions, that shows light wear with a small unopened slit towards the top edge of the spine but it is fully intact. The blue slipcase is solid with one tiny rub on the bottom edge and the lightest touches of wear, typical to this edition. Overall a beautiful set of the most important Grisham book. "A Time to Kill" was John Grisham's debut novel. After numerous rejections from publishers, it was initially released by Wynwood Press in a modest first printing of 5,000 copies. Following the breakout success of "The Firm," "A Time to Kill" was reissued and quickly rose to bestseller status, later receiving a hardcover edition from Doubleday. Grisham has described the novel as autobiographical, with the young attorney serving as a stand-in for himself and was inspired by a harrowing courtroom testimony Grisham witnessed early in his legal career. The author spent several years completing the book. Scott Turow's "Presumed Innocence" and Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" are frequently cited as key influences. The novel was later followed by two sequels, "Sycamore Row" (2013) and "A Time for Mercy" (2020), both set in the same fictional world.

First edition of Grisham's first book. Octavo, original half cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author before publication on the half-title page, "To Jim Brantley - I hope you enjoy the book. Look forward to seeing you around the Capitol. Best Wishes, John Grisham 8-18-88." At the time of publication, Grisham was a member of the Mississippi State House of Representatives in the Capitol along with Jim Brantley, a judge and former attorney. The inscription is dated August of 1988, before the official publication date of 1989. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with small losses to the extremities. Jacket design by Susanne DeMarco. A unique example. A Time To Kill was rejected by numerous publishers before Wynwood Press eventually published it in a small first printing of only 5,000 copies. When the novel did not initially sell well, Grisham collected the unsold books and destroyed them. Very few of the first 5,000 remain. "Grisham's pleasure in relating the Byzantine complexities of Clanton politics is contagious and he tells a good story. An enjoyable book" (Library Journal).

John Grisham was born on February 8, 1955 in Jonesboro, AK. At four Grisham's family would settle in Mississippi, where Grisham would grow up, holding several odd-jobs as a teenager, and giving up on his dream of being a baseball player before heading to college at age 18. Pursuing higher education was always something Grisham's family encouraged, and pushed him to earn both a bachelors' and law degree, a career and interest that would inspire his writings to come. As his legal career began, Grisham entered into the political sphere as well in 1983, winning a seat in the Mississippi House of Representatives. Though he was the vice-chairman of several committees, Grisham would fall out of favor in 1988, leaving his position in 1990. During the last years of his political career, out of favor with the legislature, Grisham dedicated much of his time to his novels. His first novel, "A Time to Kill", saw middling success, selling only 5,000 copies in 1988. It would be Grisham's second novel, "The Firm", which would truly see Grisham's career blossom. "The Firm" remained on the New York Times Bestseller list for 47 weeks in 1991, beginning a record of Grisham's novels remaining on the Bestseller list in some capacity for the next 20 years. "The Firm" would be adapted into a movie in 1993, grossing $270 million, and leading to Grisham's novels having a short run through 1994 of immense success, seeing leads from Tom Cruise, to Denzel Washington, and Susan Sarandon, and each earning over $100 million. Following "The Firm" in 1991 until 2011, Grisham would have a nearly 20 year run of being at or near the top of the New York Times Bestseller lists, notably beaten by "The DaVinci Code" in 2003-2004. His 2017 novels "Camino Island" and "The Rooster Bar" would be released to great acclaim, "Camino Island" earning the top spot on several best seller lists, "The Rooster Bar" named "his most original work yet". Many of Grisham's legal thrillers are set in the fictional town of Clanton, in the equally fictional Ford County, Mississippi. Grisham has not restricted his thrillers to fictional settings, using New Orleans, Louisiana, Biloxi, Mississippi, and Black Oak, Arkansas as settings for other novels. 1384470. Special Collections.
