Copyright 1890. 201 Pages. 1/2 black linen with red linen covered boards. Gilt title on black spine, at edge of black and red is a gilt decoration of a line of leaves. The cover boards shows the title in black on red. The cover art is by the renowned binder and cover designer, Sarah Wyman Whitman. Over twenty-five years Whitman did the covers for more than 300 Houghton and Mifflin works. She was also sought after for her work in stained glass. Moderate edge wear at top and base of spine and at lower corners. Original owners s name inscribed with a Christmas message dated 1890. Binding is showing some slight starting between signatures. The title and copyright pages bear no notations indicating a later printing (e.g twenty-fifth thousandth), no adverts. This first edition is beleived to be a first printing. Timothy, age ten, sets out to rescue his two year old foster "sister" with his dog Rags. Scene II, Little Timothy Jessup assumes parental responsibilities. Kate Douglas Wiggin wrote twenty or more books. This one was written ten years before her most famous work, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. Wiggin, a fixture in Hollis, Maine, and only the second woman to receive an honorary degree from Bowdoin College, also spent a substantial portion of her life in the San Francisco area where she had been a school teacher prior to taking up writing.

This work was written whne she was a boarder a the Carll boarding house by the Saco River; she would later buy the property in 1895 and use it as her summer home. It became known as Quillcote, or house of the pen.
