These "pepeha" , however, cover a broader range that sayings and include proverbs, figures of speech, charms and humour, with many of them excerpts from oratory delivered on marae. Hirini Moko Mead was the first professor of Maori Studies and Victoria University while Neil Grove, from the United States, who came to NZ after long service in the US Army, became interested in Maori language scholarship when living in Wellington from 1973. He attainded a master's degree in Maori Studies at Victoria University. He died in late 1999 before the book was published. This book broke new ground in Maori scholarship and literature when first published in 2001, with this first reprint in 2003. 448 pages, including references, subject index and proper names index. Blue card covers VG++, internally excellent, no inscriptions.
