First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This VG quality first edition book was published in 1965 by Grosset & Dunlap. It is 7-5/8" tall and has 177 numbered pages of text; it is format #3, as per Mattson & Davis's bibliography (Grosset & Dunlap; 7-5/8"; pictorial composition binding, medium blue spine & back cover with black lettering for title, white lettering for author; pictorial front, in colors; spine & back cover are light orange [or "school bus yellow"]; decorated end pages are black line drawings depicting the same scene as the early end pages did; frontis +8 to +11 full or partial page illustration, all on plain paper. No dust jacket). This book is square, extremely clean, free of edge dings with all four corners lightly bumped; the head and heel of the spine are lightly bumped with slight color loss. The bottom edges have virtually no wear except at the heel of the spine, which has some wear and color loss. The blue top stain has several dots of water damage which have caused some "bleeding" of blue onto the tops of the end pages and some text pages--that "bleeding" is never more than 1/8" onto the top edge of a page, so the text is not at all affected. Other than that staining, the interior is completely free of writing, stray marks, page damage of any type and any other stains. Both hinges are very strong and not damaged. The frontis and other illustrations are intact. The paper is quite flexible. The book lists only the first 25 Swift Jr. titles on the rear panel; there is no list in the book.
