Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. At The Top of My Voice and Other Poems; Felice Holman; drawings by Edward Gorey; W. W. Norton & Company, Inc., New York, 1970. The True first edition. From the blurb Felice Holman has been writing poetry for many years, and her stories for children abound with rhymes and verse. This first collection is a selection of poems which she feels are mostly about those things that are seen, heard, and felt, as a young child might see, hear, and feel them. Delightful, bouncy, and direct, this collection, like Miss Holman s popular stories for children, reflect her special sense of wonder and her wry combination of wisdom and wit. Edward Gorey s fine and amusing drawings are a perfect complement. Felice Holman (1919 2023) published her first book of poetry for children: At the Top of My Voice, this book, in 1970. Edward St. John Gorey (1925 2000) was an American writer, Tony Award-winning costume designer, and artist, noted for his own illustrated books as well as cover art and illustration for books by other writers. His characteristic pen-and-ink drawings often depict vaguely unsettling narrative scenes in Victorian and Edwardian settings. From 1953 to 1960, he lived in Manhattan and worked for the Art Department of Doubleday Anchor, where he illustrated book covers, added illustrations to text, and provided typographic design. He illustrated works as diverse as Bram Stoker's Dracula, H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds, and T. S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. Throughout his career, he illustrated over 200 book covers for Doubleday Anchor, Random House's Looking Glass Library, Bobbs-Merrill, and as a freelance artist. This small format book, 55 pages is in fine condition in a fine dust jacket that is in a protective mylar wrap. The Norton first edition was followed by a new edition from Scribners. This first printing is very, very scarce and a better copy would be impossible to find.
