Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Understanding Jack Kerouac" by Matt Theado was issued in the excellent "Understanding Contemporary American Literature" series published by the University of South Carolina in 2001. This is the second printing hardcover. The hardcover is now Out of Print (OP). The series is, by the way, edited by Matthew J. Bruccoli. This particular copy has a remainder mark on the bottom text-block edge. ******************************************* From the jacket blurb : "UNDERSTANDING JACK KEROUAC introduces a new generation of readers to what Matt Theado calls Kerouac's 'unwieldy accretion of published work . Fiction, poetry, nonfiction, selected letters, religious writing, and 'true story novels.' Presenting this cultural icon of the Beat Generation primarily as a writer than as a social rebel or media celebrity, Theado elucidates the reasons Kerouac's reputation has outlived disparaging beatnik associations and why his recently published works have attracted an expanded readership." Theado takes a book-by-book approach to the sometimes confusing canon and develops a framework for understanding Kerouac's thematic concerns, writing techniques, and artistic evolution." ***************************************** SERIES : Understanding Contemporary American Literature / SERIES EDITOR : Matthew J. Paperback. Condition: OKAZ. The Town and the City est le premier roman de Jack Kerouac.

Paperback. Condition: NEUF. Jack Kerouac (1922-1969) was an American novelist and poet, who, alongside William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, was a pioneer of the Beat Generation. This is his first published novel, "The Town and the City," and it is highly autobiographical. Inspired by his idol, Thomas Wolfe, Kerouac explores the emotional territory of his boyhood through the five sons and three daughters of the Martin family. Growing up in a dying Massachusetts mill town, the young Martins must come to terms with their bankruptcy and WWII. Kerouac's own portrait is apparent in three of the sons: Joe, the wild risk taker; Francis, the intellectual and cynic; and Peter, the football player and independent thinker. A reading copy of Jack Kerouac's first novel; he still goes by "John Kerouac" at this point in his life.
