Publisher's illustrated paperback by László Rajk. Published in 1965 in his native country, the novel depicts the backwardness of Stalinism. Kundera's…novel caused a huge scandal, and the Party made sure that Tréfa disappeared from the shelves of bookshops and libraries. Kundera played a major role in the events of the Prague Spring of 1968, and after the fall of the Prague Wall, he could not escape the fate of his hero. The book was immediately translated into Hungarian and was about to be officially published in 1968. However due to the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact nations, among them Hungary in August 1968, the already printed and bound volumes never reached the bookstores, the title became banned, and most copies were destroyed. Eventually, twenty years later, in 1986, the book was first published in Hungarian, still underground, in this samizdat edition. - Samizdat editions, mostly political pamphlets, appeared in Hungary in the 1970s in the poor form of carbon copies of typescripts. Later in the 80s the so-called Democratic Opposition in Hungary established semi-underground publishings, like AB Független to publish not merely political literature but also literature that was banned by the Communist politics. Illustrator: László Rajk Jr. (1949, Budapest 2019) was a Hungarian architect, designer and political activist. As an architect, he became the member of the Hungarian avantgarde movement. From 1975 he joined the Democratic Opposition, the underground political movement in Hungary, therefore from 1980 he was blacklisted, and was not allowed to work under his own name. In 1981 with Gábor Demszky (Mayor of Budapest from 1990) he founded the independent, underground AB Publishing House, and ran an illegal bookstore from his apartment called "Samizdat Boutique".
