Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP, 1926 on the title page). This book was previously owned by Cecil Reginald Grundy, an English art historian, and the former Editor-in-chief of Connoisseur magazine, originally a British magazine. The front inside cover exhibits his bookplate. This will be the second book I have listed for sale that was written by Roger Fry and previously owned by Mr. Grundy. The first is titled Vision and Design. Mr. Grundy was also an author. He wrote a book titled English Art in the XVIII Century; also James Ward R.A. : His Life and Works; and co-wrote A catalogue of the Pictures and Drawings in the Collection of Frederick John Nettlefold. You can see the covers of Transformations in the photos. They are in pretty nice shape, minor soiling, minor smooth rubbing or color fade, thin scratch off the front bottom edge. The spine has some toning, some wear at its ends. There is a little bit of rubbing on a few of the letters on the spine. The top and middle edges look pretty good. The bottom edges have some rub-through. And there is rub-through at each of the four corners. The top page edge is gilt. The middle and bottom page edges are deckled or rough-cut. They did a very solid job of it. The book is square and the spine is pretty straight. The binding is quite decent. I found only a couple of instances of a very thin space at the juncture between facing pages, these facing pages being tightly bound from top to bottom. The covers are nicely, tightly bound, no spaces at their junctures with their facing end papers. There is some foxing on the aforementioned bookplate on the front inside cover, as well as just adjacent to it. There are also a few very small penned numbers and the word 'Art' just above the bookplate. The half-title page has a few spots of foxing as well. The frontispiece (a Ram's head from the T'ang Dynasty) is pretty much free of foxing, the facing title page has very little of it. That's also the case with the pages in the first chapter, 'Transformations: Some Questions in Esthetics, little to no foxing or spotting. And then through all the pages in the book no conspicuous foxing or spotting, at most a very occasional light amber spot. The pages are also exceptionally clean. As I go through them now I am not finding any instances of soiling. And very positively, despite being on semi-glossy paper, I'm not finding any real foxing on any of the pages with plates, illustrations. I have seen some with a very light bit of toning off and edge, nothing much of anything. I'm also not finding any conspicuous creasing, no placeholder creases. There are no markings in the book. No writing other than those few numbers and the word 'Art' on the front inside cover. And Mr. Grundy's bookplate is the only attachment. The Illustrations page identifies 36 plates, including the frontispiece. I have gone through all the pages and can report that they are all present. Curiously, Plate XXII is across from page 71 and Plate XXI is across from page 72. That's also how it's listed on the Illustrations page. Really getting into the minutia now! There's also a reference to 'Illustrations in the Text', thirteen pages present them. Here are the chapter headings: Some Questions In Esthetics, Art and the State, Culture and Snobbism, Some Aspects of Chinese Art, Fra Bartolommeo, The Seicento, J.S. Sargent, London Sculptors and Sculptors, Book Illustration and the Modern Example, Speculations in Lasnguedoc, Vincent Van Gogh, Seurat, On Some Modern Drawings, and finally, Plastic Colour.
