Battling Hunger - Building Lives. 9.5"x6.25", 132 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. This is the story of what has happened in one corner of a vast and thriving enterprise called hunger. It is an American story, and it has unfolded in plain sight on the streets of the capital city of New Jersey, one of the nation's wealthiest states. Drawing on extensive interviews, research and personal experience, veteran journalist and writer Lee Seglem goes behind the scenes of a persistent national scandal to offer a compelling, genuinely human account of the volunteers, workers and patrons of place called TASK - the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen. From humble beginnings in the basement of a church to a million-dollar building expansion, the story of TASK is emblematic of desperate efforts under way in communities across the U.S. as overburdened food banks, soup kitchens, pantries and other nonprofit providers of emergency food and shelter scramble to keep up with a pervasive scourge while fighting a holding action against its underlying causes. In Plain Sight shatters myths and stereotypes and provides a powerful, poignant record of a deeply disturbing 21st Century phenomenon that many people don't think about but should, a phenomenon that demands a prominent place in any responsible political and social agenda. From the Dust Jacket: "The Roman orator and statesman Cicero warned that one who is ignorant of history is doomed to repeat its mistakes. In an age which is increasingly removed from its social, historical and religious roots, history could not be more important. To that end, Monsignor Joseph C. Shenrock and his team of contributing authors have put together the story of the foundation rock of the Catholic Faith in what was to become the Diocese of Trenton, how that rock was built upon, and the magnificent edifice which resulted. Key architects are highlighted, while taking note of every little stone in the total structure which makes up the impressive network of parishes, schools, hospitals and social service agencies committed to building up the Kingdom of God through the Church of Christ established in central and southern New Jersey. The curious and even the cynical, as well as the faithful, will find a fascinating story with lessons aplenty for those who wish to face the future with confidence.". INSCRIBED / SIGNED by the AUTHOR. First Edition. Oversize Hardcover. Very Good condition/Very Good dust jacket. xv, 575pp.
