Die geheimnisvollen Briefe machen ihn so neugierig undruhelos, daß er unbedingt das Rätsel der Briefschreiberin entdecken will. - Joachim Fernau (* 11. September 1909 in Bromberg; 24. November 1988 in Florenz) war ein deutscher Journalist, Schriftsteller, Maler und Kunstsammler hugenottischer Abstammung. Ein Teil seiner Werke erschien unter dem Pseudonym John Forster. Leben und Werk: . In Berlin arbeitete er dann vor allem für den Ullstein-Verlag und für die Telegraphen-Union als auf Sportreportagen spezialisierter freier Journalist. Im Zuge der Gleichschaltung" wurde die Telegraphen-Union dem Deutschen Nachrichtenbüro zugeordnet, welches Fernau kündigte, vermutlich weil dieser nicht bereit war, in die NSDAP einzutreten. Fernau verlobte sich 1936 mit Nicha Horn, einer Jüdin, obwohl die Nürnberger Rassengesetze (1935) eine Heirat nicht erlaubt hätten. Seine Verlobte wanderte 1939 nach England aus. Im August 1939 besuchte Fernau sie in London, kehrte aber nach Deutschland zurück. Bei Fernaus Rückkehr nach Berlin lag der Einberufungsbefehl zur Wehrmacht vor. Er diente bei einem Polizeibataillon und wurde im Frühjahr 1940 als Kriegsberichterstatter zu einer "Propagandakompanie" der Waffen-SS abkommandiert. 1942 berichtete er von der Ostfront in Russland. Zwischenzeitlich war seine Verlobung aufgelöst worden. In Berlin lernte er Gabriele Kerschensteiner kennen, die Enkelin des Pädagogen Georg Kerschensteiner, die er 1943 heiratete. . Im Februar 1945 kam Fernau in ein Lazarett nach Baden-Baden. Nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges ging er nach München, um als freier Schriftsteller und Journalist einen Neuanfang zu wagen. Zwischenzeitlich arbeitete Fernau als Redakteur in Stuttgart. 1949 wurde er als nicht belastet" eingestuft, da er keiner Partei angehört hatte und den Nachweis über seine Zwangsversetzung zur Waffen-SS erbringen konnte. 1952 erschien Deutschland, Deutschland über alles., eine weitgehend humoristisch und salopp erzählte Geschichte Deutschlands, mit der Fernau seinen charakteristischen Stil fand. Das Buch wurde, wie viele andere seiner Werke, ein Bestseller. Er griff Stoffe wie die Geschichte des alten Griechenlands, des Römischen Reiches, Preußens, oder das Nibelungenlied auf und erleichterte dem Leser den Zugang durch Verwendung von damals aktueller Alltagssprache, durch Ironie und die ihm eigene schnoddrige Distanz, sowie durch plötzliche Wechsel zwischen Witz und Ernsthaftigkeit. Fernaus Bücher erheben keinen wissenschaftlichen Anspruch. Sie sind Prosaerzählungen, die seine Weltsicht zum Ausdruck bringen, welche von tiefer Skepsis gegenüber der Moderne und von Pessimismus geprägt ist. Fernaus zentrales Anliegen waren die deutsche Nation im europäischen Zusammenhang und ihr wechselvolles Schicksal (Deutschland Meine Liebe, mein Alptraum" hieß es in Deutschland, Deutschland über alles.). . Fernau verfasste auch mehrere Romane, darunter das teilweise autobiographische Buch Die jungen Männer (1960), die Liebesgeschichte Weinsberg oder die Kunst der stacheligen Liebe (1963) und den Goethe-Roman War es schön in Marienbad? (1982). Fernau starb 1988 in seiner Wahlheimat Florenz im Alter von 79 Jahren und wurde in München auf dem Alten Bogenhausener Friedhof beigesetzt. .
