Magazine / Periodical First Edition
First publication of this novel in the Lensman series as published in AMAZING STORIES magazine for January - April 1934. These magazines are from the collection of Jack Darrow sold to Gerry de la Ree sold to Harry Foster Noble sold to yours truly. Darrow had the habit of rating his favorite stories on the contents page by number, page count and total number of pages of fiction and non-fiction in the magazine. In effect this is a First Fandom grouping. But for the odd habit of writing on the contents page Darrow's magazines (and we have seen quite a few of them over the years) are remarkably well preserved. The January issue appears to be slightly trimmed, the others are not. All with tanned but very supple pages. NEAR FINE copies, writing on the contents page not withstanding. Other contributors to this lot are: Edmond Hamilton, P Schuyler Miller, Harl Vincent, David H Keller, Philip Nowlan (Buck Rogers), Francis Flagg & others.

The book is in Very Good- condition and has a Near Fine FACSIMILE dust jacket. The book and its contents are in somewhat clean, bright condition. The Spine ends and corners of the book covers have some bumping, rubbing and wear. The Book covers have toning / fading to the spine and edges, and the blue cloth has noticeable generalized darkening and foxing. The text pages are clean and bright. There are strips of tape residue / tape to the pastedown pages (both front and rear ). All three edges of the text block have noticeable toning / darkening. The text pages are clean and bright. The facsimile dust jacket is clean and bright. "This book would be Triplanetary, "in which scientific detail would not be bothered about, and in which his imagination would run riot." Indeed, characters within the story point out its psychological and scientificimplausibilities, and sometimes even seem to suggest self-parody. At other times, they are conspicuously silent about obvious implausibilities. The January 1933 issue of Astounding announced that Triplanetary would appear in the March issue, and that issue's cover illustrated a scene from the story, but Astounding's financial difficulties prevented the story from appearing. Smith then submitted the manuscript to Wonder Stories, whose new editor, 17-year-old Charles D. Hornig, rejected it, later boasting about the rejection in a fanzine. First Edition. HISTORY OF CIVILIZATION being TRIPLANETARY & GALACTIC PATROL, Fantasy Press, 1955, first edition, some browning to the gutters and outer margins of the paste-downs as often found, else near fine copies. These 2 orphans most certainly lend credence to the fact that not all sets produced (allegedly 75) and distributed remained intact. I have had other strays from this highly desirable Fantasy Press production as well and have noted other dealers occasionally listing the same over the years. TRIPLANETARY is wonderfully INSCRIBED as usual by the author while GALACTIC PATROL is just SIGNED by Smith. Further testimony to there being less that 75 sets being sold in tact is evidence of simple binding mistakes. Indeed, our copy of GALACTIC PATROL has been mis-bound resulting in a text block of this title incorrectly stamped on the spine as CHILDREN OF THE LENS. All in all, a fun pairing for those who may not have the funds to be able to purchase the complete set of six.
