Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Reprint. Jacket has most of the wear on the spine - a small chip at top of spine (not affecting lettering) and closed and repaired tears. Jacket has light soiling overall, due to it's cheap wartime quality. It depicts a nurse carrying the three titles of the book in a baby carriage: Topper Takes A Trip, The Night Life of the Gods, & The Bishop's Jaegers. The book itself is crisp and clean with a blank bookplate. Herbert Roese (illustrator).…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Garden City, NY: The Sun Dial Press, 1944. Reset and printed from new plates in July 1944, this mid-century omnibus edition collects three of Thorne Smith's most iconic comic fantasies including Topper Takes a Trip, The Night Life of the Gods, and The Bishop's Jaegers. Illustrated throughout by Roese, the volume captures Smith's signature blend of the risqué, the supernatural, and the joyously absurd. The Sun Dial Press reissues of Smith's work were widely read during the wartime and postwar years and helped solidify his reputation as one of America's great comic stylists. Condition: Very Good. Red cloth boards remain bright with strong black line art across the front panel and spine; light rubbing, faint spots, and minor corner wear. Binding is sound and hinges secure. Interior pages are clean, lightly toned, and free of markings aside from a small owner name ('Margaret') on the front free endpaper. Notably, the book retains unique period ephemera, laid loosely inside: a handwritten address slip for S. M. Bindell, 2531 Bollean Rd., Wolfe 10766, on the outside of a Guardian Service cookware purchase receipt from 1947 listing multiple household items. These artifacts provide an appealing snapshot of mid-century American domestic culture and materially enhance the book's provenance interest. Edition/Printing: 1944 Sun Dial Press reprint, newly reset from fresh plates (as stated). Copyright pages reflect original publication dates of 1931 and 1932 for the novels included. Thorne Smith (1892-1934) was an American humorist best known for his comic novels featuring alcohol-soaked supernatural misadventures, including the Topper series, The Night Life of the Gods, and Skin and Bones. His playful irreverence, breezy dialogue, and surreal fantasy sequences made him a favorite of 1930s readers and later influenced television comedies such as I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched. Smith's work remains notable for its blend of satire, romance, and the absurd. Roese was a house illustrator for The Sun Dial Press during the 1930s and 1940s, known for a lively, cartoon-inflected style that complemented the imprint's humorous and light fiction reissues. His line drawings, often brisk, exaggerated, and full of motion, became a recognizable visual signature in Sun Dial's editions of authors like Thorne Smith, whose comic and slightly risqué narratives paired naturally with Roese's playful touch.
