Born in Falls Church, Virginia, Yates pursued an extensive academic journey, earning a B. S. In civil engineering from Virginia Military Institute in 1924, an A. B. In psychology and education from Washington and Lee University in 1926, and both M. A. And Ph. D. Degrees in mathematics and applied mathematics from Johns Hopkins University in 1928 and 1931, respectively.
