Published by STUTTGART TO BADEN BADEN GERMANY, 1938
Seller: Katz Fine Manuscripts Inc., Cochrane, AB, Canada
Condition: Very Good. On offer is an original, historically significant manuscript relic of World War II and the Nazi regime being a handwritten book and travel diary of a 'famed' Hitler Youth [Hitler Jugend] troop. Likely created by one of the more calligraphic hands in the troop or perhaps commissioned by the troop, historians and researchers of the group and Hitler's manipulation of German youth will find a unique and historical journal enhanced further by numerous photographs, a map, mileage log, etc. plus some ephemera tucked in, all in period, gothic German language calligraphy. It appears that the troop, der Gefolgschaften 6/59, spent July of 1938 on foot travelling from Stuttgart to Baden Baden. Adding further cachet are later entries dated 1991 wherein home addresses and names of all participants at a reunion are included. Research finds that this particular troop of Hitler Youth enjoyed a fair amount of newspaper attention as they were considered a premier group. The premium 10 x 7.5 inch book, as attested by the designer onion skin page separators and thick rag bond, has sixty [60] pages almost all filled. Intriguingly the books is filled with group and paired shots of the young men but the back fep features a photo of a woman identified in pencil as 'Elly aus Berneck'. The photographs add proof to the propaganda side to the Hitler Youth as they spread good will and even manual labor as shown in the pictures throughout the trip. This is a superb, unusual relic of the immediate pre World War II Nazi era. HISTORICAL NOTES: Youth Camps were critical to Hitler's rise to power. One online source quotes Kurt Gruber, the director of the movement saying: the Hitler Youth "a new youth movement of young social-revolutionary minded Germans" trained to risk their own lives if necessary to free Germany from "the shackles of Capitalists and the enemies of the German race." ".a very heavy emphasis on competition. Just about every task, no matter how big or small, was turned into an individual, team, or unit competition. This included boys and girls sports, the quality of singing during propaganda marches, and Winter Aid collections. Boys and girls were kept constantly busy. The Nazis took advantage of the natural enthusiasm of young people, their craving for action and desire for peer approval, hoping, ultimately, each young person would come to regard his or her HJ or BDM unit as a home away from home, or perhaps as their real home." There is some splitting to the spine and some chipping to the foot but overall the book is VG. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. German Language.
