It sold one million copies in its first two years—no mean feat in wartime. It is a compilation of anecdotes, urban legends, jokes, ghost stories, what Cerf called "shaggy dog stories", and profiles of celebrities. It includes excellent illustrations by the artist Carl Rose. This copy is in good shape. 380 pages, plain beige boards with gold and red on the spine. Published by Simon & Schuster, 1945, in accordance with the Wartime Production Rules. No dust jacket. There are some spots on the cover and the spine has darkened somewhat. Inside, the original owner wrote her name on the front end-paper, but the signature is small.
