Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Minus. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. Signed and Inscribed on the title page ('For Morris, with high regard and very best wishes, Bill, Cummington, MA., 5 July 2001'). Also included is a signed letter (and envelope) to the inscribee, his friend Professor Morri…s Grossman. You can see the covers of the book itself in the photographs provided. They are in very nice condition, very clean, very little wear. This 428 page book is square and tight, very solidly bound. The pages are exceptionally clean. There aren't any markings or attachments. With the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. Three of the early pages, including the title page, have a light crease at the bottom corner. Page 103-104 was produced a little too long and now has a folding-in crease at the bottom corner. A few pages following that have the impression of that crease. Otherwise, the condition of the pages is excellent. I didn't see any other creasing or dogeared corners. The dust jacket has some minor wear. You can see it in the first few photographs. There is a little bit of light handling soiling on the front, there's also a tiny tear off the top edge of the front. That's also the case of the bottom edge of the spine. There's a tiny loss off the top edge of the spine, and there are several small tears off the top edge of the rear. The front flap is price-clipped. The dust jacket has already been fitted with a protective cover. From the dust jacket front flap 'Dr. Johnson said that the poet should be concerned with "general properties and large appearances" and not with minute particulars, with "the streaks of tulip." But by presenting with unusual force a precise in particular view, William Jay Smith, as poet and critic, shows that Dr. Johnson may well have been wrong. Mr. Smith has a keen eye for significant detail. And because he can always put things properly in perspective, this criticism, like his poetry, has extraordinary range and resonance'. First edition limited to 29 signed and numbered copies. This book is the final production in a series of three accordion books produced by Nedim Sönmez. Contains eleven signed…original tipped-in samples of marbled flowers. Hand bound by the author. From the artist: "Tulip is one of the most beloved and popular flowers in the world. Tulip, the symbol of beauty, has appeared in various branches of fine arts and literature since the 12th century. Starting with Mevlana Celalaeddin Rumi in the 13th century, many poets included tulips in their poems. Tulip has been interpreted by artists from many branches of painting and crafts and made it the subject of their works in its most beautiful form. Materials such as tiles, fabric, wood, stone and paper are decorated with tulip motifs. As a result of a unique love and admiration, tulip gave its name to a period in the Ottoman Empire and the Netherlands. Tulip, one of the most popular motifs in book arts such as illumination and miniature painting, has also influenced the art of marbling. The tulip motif is a theme that I have dealt with lovingly and in different interpretations in my artistic life of over 40 years. This book, which I created under the influence of the unique beauty and magic of this flower, is the final book in a triple accordion book series. The first two books in the series were Miniature Flowers in Marbling and A Collection of Historical Decorated Papers." cloth covered boards, marbled label on front cover, accordion bound, housed in a handmade marbled paper covered boards box, silk cloth.
