"One of Kushner's strengths always has been his ability to empathize, to understand the pain of others on a personal level, and to share his gentle wisdom in an accessible manner." - The Plain Dealer. "Rabbi Harold Kushner believes that the Twenty-third Psalm - perhaps the most memorable and cherished chapter of the Bible - offers spiritual riches that can change a person's life. He has found that these simple, beautiful verses, full of honesty and optimism, have an almost magical power to comfort and calm. The psalm does not pretend that life is ever easy, but it offers a masterful guide to living in the world with faith and courage. Drawing on over forty years of his own thinking, on other biblical scholars, and on history, Kushner gracefully demonstrates how this sustaining work can help us cope with every aspect of life, from mundane jealousies to the death of a loved one to unimaginable tragedies of global proportions." - from the rear outer cover. "This is a nurturing book that will bring comfort to those who are grieving and peace to those who are caught in the vise of constant fear." - Spirituality & Health . Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Ernest Norling (illustrator). 1st Edition. The Lord is My Shepherd - The Twenty-Third Psalm. Large hardcover portfolio containing 19 separate original lithographs, all signed by the artist, Ernest R. Norling. Published by Craftsman Press c1948. Each of the 19 pieces consists of a large black and white illustration with cream-colored border and a portion of the Psalm as the title. Together the 19 comprise the entire passage of the Psalm, which presents the theme of God as a shepherd and is probably one of the most well-loved passages in the Bible. The artist, Ernest R. Norling (1892 Pasco, WA - 1974 Seattle, WA), was an important Northwest artist, muralist and illustrator. He graduated from Whitman College. After college he worked as an engineering office draftsman, then moved to Chicago, where he studied at the Art Institute. He moved to Seattle around 1930, where he taught art at Cornish School. In 1934 one of his paintings - depicting a lumberjack sawing a Douglas fir - was picked by President Roosevelt for the White House. He was one of a select group of Washington artists to take part in the Public Works Art Project during the Depression, for which he created paintings of the Civilian Conservation Corps at work. He worked for the Seattle Times and as an art director, for Boeing and illustrated a number of children's books including a series of "Pogo" books, along with his wife Josephine. He did commissions for the University of Washington, including one that depicted events and people from the UW's history. The portfolio is 14.5x20.5 inches, and each two-color woodcut is 11.5x19.5 inches, with printed caption and its own paper folder. Condition: All 19 lithographs and their paper folders are in excellent condition. The custom-made portfolio is bound in linen-like fabric and has brown titles. The portfolio is spattered with small stains on the front. Signed by Author(s).

Pamphlet. 95p. staplebound booklet, reprint of a 1927 tract with a new preface, signed by Haboush in Arabic on the half-title page. Haboush described himself in promotional materials as "a Galilean by birth, a Lebanese by blood, a Syrian by race, a Christian by faith and an American by adoption." The son of a shepherd, he immigrated to the US around the age of 12, converted to Protestant Christianity, and undertook lecture tours (often dressed in Galilean clothing which was described as similar to that of Biblical times). One of his favorite lecture themes was the 23rd Psalm.
