Paper. Condition: Good. First Edition. A Small Collection of Documents in Relation to the Military Commission for the future Lt Colonel Francis Charles Trollope. Including two original hand written letters from Irish Field Marshal Garnet Joseph Wolseley, 1st Viscount Wolseley to his father Sir Charles Trollope in relation to the… delay in the commission due to his age. Also includes a Joker card from the 11th Prince Albert's Own Hussars. The regiment served in the Crimean War with the two Generals Trollope and Wolseley. The regiment was part of the Light Brigade commanded by Cardigan and was also involved in the Charge of the Light Brigade in October 1854. What the joker card link is between General Trollope and Field Marshall Wolseley is unknown. Maybe a favour is owed or a joke between themselves. The letters are dated 1876. The two long secretarial military letters to the Northampton and Rutland Militia from Major Garnet Wolseley and politician William Dalrymple outline the reasons that the Military Commission for the future Lt Colonel Francis Charles Trollope will be delayed by a year due to his age. Various sizes. Condition is good. Light folding creasing. More images can be taken upon request. Ref18603. Signed by Author(s).

Unbound. Condition: Good. First Edition. Two documents, approximately 210mm x 325mm in size. Creased, slightly chipped and torn to folds and corners, but without loss of text. Firstly a document dated Nov. 17th 1827, which is a statement of weekly outgoings and income for shareholders, noting the breakdown of the ship 'The Suffo…lk', losing seven weeks of income "in the most favourable part of the Season. Discouraged by this circumstance, the Committee has reason to think many of the Proprietors are inclined to dissolve the connection altogether". This evidently was the conclusion, as the next document is from the Secretary of the Company, noting that it had been resolved unanimously "that under the circumstances in which the Society is placed, it would be desirable and proper that it should be dissolved, and we do hereby consent to and approve of a dissolution of the said Society accordingly", signed by the Secretary to foot. However the Suffolk Record Office has articles of co-partnership and lists of shareholders dated 1838 Size: Folio. Pamphlet.

Read and reap." - Michael Modzelewski, author. "I a language rich in prose and poetry, Vincent Parmentola expresses his spiritual insights in order to capture the profound meaning of his phenomenal adventures while on the path of self discovery. Inspired by the words of Jalaluddin Rumi, the great Persian poet (1207-1273), Vincent Parmentola takes us on his journey to find spiritual perfection and closeness to God. By sharing his exciting experiences, he hopes to enliven, motivate and encourage those with the desire to undertake their own journey of spiritual awakening." - from the rear outer cover. ONE: Typed Letter Signed from 'Roger Vansittart' to 'Sir Richard Harington, Bart., | Whitbourne Court, | Worcester.' Foreign Office; 13 April 1927. 1p., foolscap 8vo. In fair condition aged and worn. He is 'directed by Secretary Sir Austen Chamberlain to refer to your letter of the 5th instant regarding the possibility of a clai…m being preferred against the Mexican Government in respect of your holding in Mexican Railways'. He is transmitting 'the full text of a Foreign Office statement recently issued to the Press [Item Two below] explaining the circumstances under which claims against the Mexican Government would lie under the recently concluded Anglo-Mexican Claims Convention'. Vansittart notes that '[g]enerally speaking it may be said that claims in respect of interest on individual railway bonds do not fall within the purview of the Convention', and suggests that Harington should 'in the first instance communicate with the Boards of any British owned Railway Companies in Mexico in which you may hold shares or bonds. TWO: The press statement referred to in Item One above. 1p., 8vo. Headed 'CONFIDENTIAL.' At foot: '3931 [16000]'. Aged and with creasing and wear to extremities. A detailed statement, broken down into five sections. Begins: 'A CONVENTION has been concluded between the British and Mexican Governments for the adjustment of pecuniary claims for losses incurred by British subjects in Mexico on account of revolutionary acts which occurred between November 1910 and May 1920.' No other copy traced, either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC. THREE: Printed 'Circular Letter' by 'Thomas Linton, | Secretary.' Headed: 'The Interoceanic Railway of Mexico (Acapulco to Vera Cruz) Limited. | The Mexican Eastern Railway Company Limited. | The Mexican Southern Railway Limited.' Dated from 'Finsbury Pavement House, | London, E.C.2. | 18th March, 1927.' 2pp., foolscap 8vo. Aged and with creasing and wear to extremities. Printed in black on blue-grey paper, with final note ('To the holders of both classes of deferred interest warrants of the Mexican Southern Company.') printed in red. Linton explains that 'The properties of the three Companies were seized by the Government of Mexico on the 15th August, 1914, and were not returned until the 1st January, 1926. During that period the Government administered the Railways and retained the earnings. When returned, the Railways were in bad condition, and they have not yet been restored to the 1914 standard, the cost of which is an obligation of the Government, nor has any compensation yet been recovered from the Government in respect of the loss of income during the period of attachment, which lasted for upwards of eleven years.' He proceeds to discuss what plans are 'needed in the difficult circumstances in which the Companies have been placed by reason of the non-payment of their claims against the Government'. From the Harington family papers.

Contact seller5-star sellerSixteen photographs ranging in size from 3¼ x 3¼ in. to 8 x 10 in., most mounted on heavy cardstock. The earliest two photos show young Leonhauser as a cadet at West Point, one a group portrait with his class (with a pencil line pointing to him) posed on the steps of a building, and one at the tender age of seventeen with two ot…her young men at their first camp. There are two photos from his posting to Davids Island in New York Harbor in 1892, where he served as Exchange Officer with the U.S. Army, with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Both of these images are signed below the photo by members of the Post Exchange with the "respect and gratitude" of fellow soldiers. There are eight photos relating to his service with the 15th Minnesota Volunteers during the Spanish American War. Two other photos are from his time in the Philippines with the 25th U.S. Infantry, one showing the U.S. Transport Meade, with a pencil caption on the verso, "Crossed the Pacific on her," the other an image of a Philippine native, captioned in pencil on the verso, "He guided me to the insurgent camp at O'Donel, P.I." Following his service in the Philippines, Leonhauser served at several posts in the west, including Fort Logan, Colorado and there is one photo, printing two images of troops in formation "at drill" before the post buildings. A final studio photo of an older Leonhauser in uniform is also present in this group, blind stamped with Champlain Studios, New York City. A couple of the photos are faded, some have chipping to the mounting boards, else very good. The bulk of the photos are from Leonhauser's time with the 15th Minnesota Volunteers, including images of the unit in winter quarters in Augusta, Georgia: a studio portrait photo of Leonhauser in his U.S.V. uniform [Augusta Art Gallery, photographers]; a standing view of Leonhauser captioned "The Colonel" on the mount, which was taken at "Camp MacKensie" [sic] in Augusta in 1898-99; and two other images of Leonhauser in his U.S.V. uniform in camp. Two others depict the soldiers of the 15th Minnesota, one showing the troops in Augusta during a "review" on Broad Street, Dec. 17, 1898, taken by George Cusick, one of the members of Co. L; the other some of the men in camp in front of a tent and flags, posed in two rows (one seated the remainder standing) likely also in Augusta. Two more show the troops drilling, one captioned in the image "316- Batt. drill., 15th Minn." and below the image in pencil, "my regiment at drill Augusta, Ga.," with portrait vignettes of political and military figures (including Pres. McKinley) above the image; the other a "Grand Review" at Camp Meade, PA., 1898. The 15th Minnesota was organized in July 1898, and Harry Leonhauser, a regular army officer with the 25th U.S. Infantry, volunteered to serve as a Lt. Colonel with the troop. The unit never served overseas but was posted first to Camp Ramsey, St. Paul, then to Camp Snelling, Minnesota, Camp Meade in Pennsylvania, and finally Camp McKenzie in Augusta, Georgia. While in Georgia an incident took place involving four 15th Minnesota soldiers and a local merchant. The merchant Brown Hadley shot one of the soldiers dead during an argument in his store. Some members of the unit were convinced the local man would not be properly prosecuted and attemped to take matters into their own hands. Efforts by Col. Leonhauser and others of his officers to calm the men were made but during one night several of them broke into an arms room and helped themselves to ammunition. They then headed into town to search for Hadley but were apprehended by men from the 35th Michigan and the 3rd Cavalry. Eight of the men were tried and convicted of mutiny and several officers, including Leonhauser, were reprimanded in a general order issued by General Samuel Young. Young accused him and several of his fellow officers of "deplorable inefficiency, weakness and timidity" during the "disgraceful and violent outbreak." Leonhauser protested and demanded a court of inquiry to clear his name. Although the 15th Minnesota was mustered out of service in March 1899, the inquiry convened in April at Fort Snelling. On July 1, it issued its findings, exonerating Leonhauser of any wrongdoing. By that time he had rejoined his regular Army regiment, the 25th U.S. Infantry [one of two Black infantry regiments], and was on his way to the Philippines. His friend Amasa Crossfield, a Minnesota lawyer and former captain with the 15th Minnesota wrote to inform him of the good news. That two page autograph letter [folded, some separations along folds], approx. 155 words, and signed by A.S. Crossfield, is present in this collection. Dated July 6, 1899, and accompanied by the stamped addressed envelope, it was sent to Leonhauser in the Philippines letting him know that the War Department had finally published its findings of the Court of Inquiry and that Leonhauser had been publicly exonerated. Crossfield noted in his letter that he hoped Leonhauser would not ever have to encounter Young again. Unfortunately, they had both been assigned to the Philippines. Most of the news clippings accompanying this group report on Leonhauser's exoneration or on his heroic service with the 25th Infantry in the Philippines. The miscellaneous documents include a copy of a 1918 Special Order No. 210 assigning Leonhauser to active duty as commanding officer of the Students' Army Training Corps at the Univ. of Vermont, and a typed note from his life insurance company, dated Oct. 15, 1920, acknowledging his name change to Harry A. Lee. Harry Leonhauser distinguished himself and his African American troops with the 25th Infantry in the Philippines, capturing an insurgent camp at O'Donel [also spelled O'Donnell] village, with the help of a native guide and informant, whose picture is present in this collection. According to Russell Brown in his article "Zeal and Efficiency: The Military Career of Harry A. Leonhauser," [Journal of American's Military Past. Fal.

This immense photo album archive assembled by Lt. Colonel Boyd Yaden (1906-1980), incorporates eight albums. The first of these albums document his career serving with the Provisional Co. No. 2, 1st Battalion, 55th Coastal Artillery of the U.S. Army serving the batteries at Fort Kamehameha (Fort Kam). The 55th CA was equipped with 155 mm. Grande Puissance Filloux guns, typically mounted atop concrete Panama Mounts which enabled the pieces to traverse 360 degrees, as well as 75 mm. field pieces. These remarkable images show the artillery gun crews test firing the 155 mm. guns, loading shells, night firing, camp drills, inspections, athletics, expanding the tracks for the 41st Coast Artillery Locomotive at Fort Kamehameha, and more. Of special interest are three photos documenting the first Navy Pacific Flight by Commander John Rodgers in the PN-9 Seaplane from San Pablo, CA non-stop to Honolulu, HI which ran out of gas and landed in the Pacific Ocean. The crew fashioned sails from wing fabric, and later leeboards to steer the flying boat and finally came within 15 miles of Kauai where it was discovered by the USS R-4 submarine. The second & third albums chronicle Boyd Yaden's life with his wife Myrtle Yaden (1901-1988) moving from Klamath Falls, OR to Alaskan Resident Engineer and Inspector for the Public Works Administration overseeing the installation of the sewer system in Petersburg, Alaska, with several photos showing street scenes, digging up of streets to lay pipe, earthmoving equipment, steam shovels, and finally the finished streets with bustling economic activity. In addition, there are photos of building railroad trestles, bridges, and logging operations on Wrangell Island, Alaska, with photos showing the construction, logging sites, totem poles, and then his work as supervising engineer for the Public Works Administration during the Depression building a power plant near Anchorage, AK, followed by the project of rebuilding the power plant in Seward, AK, with photos showing the phases of construction. The third album includes photos of the couple on the steamship SS Hazel B No. 2, hunting & fishing in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, the Pioneers Home in Sitka, as well as documenting trips to visit relatives in Seattle, North Dakota, and New York. Two very large photo albums are devoted to Colonel Yaden's activities as Division Engineer for United States Army Corps of Engineers, and later for the Air Transport Command in Alaska and Western Canada. The albums open with an extensive group of photos of Hammer Field near Fresno California (now Fresno Yosemite International Airport), with images showing the laying of foundations, training crash of a B-24 Bomber June 27, 1942, the theaters, bowling alley, Sub Exchange, NCO Club, tennis courts, recreational facilities, swimming pool, sandstorms, and more. In addition, Yaden oversaw the mineral and strategic materials facilities in Trona, CA, with images of the nearby Ruth Mine, loading operations onto trucks and railcars. In 1943, Yaden began an engineering and photographic.
