Including two original hand written letters from Irish Field Marshal Garnet Joseph Wolseley, 1st Viscount Wolseley to his father Sir Charles Trollope in relation to the delay in the commission due to his age. Also includes a Joker card from the 11th Prince Albert's Own Hussars. The regiment served in the Crimean War with the two Generals Trollope and Wolseley. The regiment was part of the Light Brigade commanded by Cardigan and was also involved in the Charge of the Light Brigade in October 1854. What the joker card link is between General Trollope and Field Marshall Wolseley is unknown. Maybe a favour is owed or a joke between themselves. The letters are dated 1876. The two long secretarial military letters to the Northampton and Rutland Militia from Major Garnet Wolseley and politician William Dalrymple outline the reasons that the Military Commission for the future Lt Colonel Francis Charles Trollope will be delayed by a year due to his age. Discouraged by this circumstance, the Committee has reason to think many of the Proprietors are inclined to dissolve the connection altogether". This evidently was the conclusion, as the next document is from the Secretary of the Company, noting that it had been resolved unanimously "that under the circumstances in which the Society is placed, it would be desirable and proper that it should be dissolved, and we do hereby consent to and approve of a dissolution of the said Society accordingly", signed by the Secretary to foot. In fair condition aged and worn. He is 'directed by Secretary Sir Austen Chamberlain to refer to your letter of the 5th instant regarding the possibility of a claim being preferred against the Mexican Government in respect of your holding in Mexican Railways'. He is transmitting 'the full text of a Foreign Office statement recently issued to the Press [Item Two below] explaining the circumstances under which claims against the Mexican Government would lie under the recently concluded Anglo-Mexican Claims Convention'. Vansittart notes that '[g]enerally speaking it may be said that claims in respect of interest on individual railway bonds do not fall within the purview of the Convention', and suggests that Harington should 'in the first instance communicate with the Boards of any British owned Railway Companies in Mexico in which you may hold shares or bonds. TWO: The press statement referred to in Item One above. 1p., 8vo. Headed 'CONFIDENTIAL.' At foot: '3931 [16000]'. Aged and with creasing and wear to extremities. A detailed statement, broken down into five sections. Begins: 'A CONVENTION has been concluded between the British and Mexican Governments for the adjustment of pecuniary claims for losses incurred by British subjects in Mexico on account of revolutionary acts which occurred between November 1910 and May 1920.' No other copy traced, either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC. THREE: Printed 'Circular Letter' by 'Thomas Linton, | Secretary.' Dated from 'Finsbury Pavement House, | London, E.C.2. | 18th March, 1927.' 2pp., foolscap 8vo. Aged and with creasing and wear to extremities. Printed in black on blue-grey paper, with final note ('To the holders of both classes of deferred interest warrants of the Mexican Southern Company.') printed in red. Linton explains that 'The properties of the three Companies were seized by the Government of Mexico on the 15th August, 1914, and were not returned until the 1st January, 1926. During that period the Government administered the Railways and retained the earnings. When returned, the Railways were in bad condition, and they have not yet been restored to the 1914 standard, the cost of which is an obligation of the Government, nor has any compensation yet been recovered from the Government in respect of the loss of income during the period of attachment, which lasted for upwards of eleven years.' He proceeds to discuss what plans are 'needed in the difficult circumstances in which the Companies have been placed by reason of the non-payment of their claims against the Government'. From the Harington family papers.

First document partially printed folio size (8x12 ½) embossed paper seal with the date 1686, affixed, dated September 11, 1770. The second document is 7 ¾ x6 ¼ dated October 5, 1780. Original and horizontal folds, some very minor chips at the edges of the first document, a couple of small holes, one causing the loss of part of the number 5 on the second document. Typical light foxing and age wear. Very good overall. It is not exactly clear why a certificate was issued and signed by Whitehead Hicks, the Major of New York City, granting 'freemanship' to Cornelius Wynkoop. There is no indication he is a person of color, or African American, which may suggest he was an indentured servant for a period. The document indicates he was a shopkeeper, and that he had applied to be made a freeman. The embossed official seal of New York gives an attractive look to the certificate, and in addition to spelling out the benefits Wynkoop will receive, The Freeman's Oath is printed on the lower portion of the document. The second document is broken into two paragraphs. In the first, the U.S. acknowledges Wynkoop to be free and independent, and part of the Sovereign States. In the second paragraph Wynkoop swears he will faithfully execute his job of office assistant. This document is dated October 5, 1780, and is signed twice by Wynkoop, and twice by Thomas Storm. Together, two documents.

This immense photo album archive assembled by Lt. Colonel Boyd Yaden (1906-1980), incorporates eight albums. The first of these albums document his career serving with the Provisional Co. No. 2, 1st Battalion, 55th Coastal Artillery of the U.S. Army serving the batteries at Fort Kamehameha (Fort Kam). The 55th CA was equipped with 155 mm. Grande Puissance Filloux guns, typically mounted atop concrete Panama Mounts which enabled the pieces to traverse 360 degrees, as well as 75 mm. field pieces. These remarkable images show the artillery gun crews test firing the 155 mm. guns, loading shells, night firing, camp drills, inspections, athletics, expanding the tracks for the 41st Coast Artillery Locomotive at Fort Kamehameha, and more. Of special interest are three photos documenting the first Navy Pacific Flight by Commander John Rodgers in the PN-9 Seaplane from San Pablo, CA non-stop to Honolulu, HI which ran out of gas and landed in the Pacific Ocean. The crew fashioned sails from wing fabric, and later leeboards to steer the flying boat and finally came within 15 miles of Kauai where it was discovered by the USS R-4 submarine. The second & third albums chronicle Boyd Yaden's life with his wife Myrtle Yaden (1901-1988) moving from Klamath Falls, OR to Alaskan Resident Engineer and Inspector for the Public Works Administration overseeing the installation of the sewer system in Petersburg, Alaska, with several photos showing street scenes, digging up of streets to lay pipe, earthmoving equipment, steam shovels, and finally the finished streets with bustling economic activity. In addition, there are photos of building railroad trestles, bridges, and logging operations on Wrangell Island, Alaska, with photos showing the construction, logging sites, totem poles, and then his work as supervising engineer for the Public Works Administration during the Depression building a power plant near Anchorage, AK, followed by the project of rebuilding the power plant in Seward, AK, with photos showing the phases of construction. The third album includes photos of the couple on the steamship SS Hazel B No. 2, hunting & fishing in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, the Pioneers Home in Sitka, as well as documenting trips to visit relatives in Seattle, North Dakota, and New York. Two very large photo albums are devoted to Colonel Yaden's activities as Division Engineer for United States Army Corps of Engineers, and later for the Air Transport Command in Alaska and Western Canada. The albums open with an extensive group of photos of Hammer Field near Fresno California (now Fresno Yosemite International Airport), with images showing the laying of foundations, training crash of a B-24 Bomber June 27, 1942, the theaters, bowling alley, Sub Exchange, NCO Club, tennis courts, recreational facilities, swimming pool, sandstorms, and more. In addition, Yaden oversaw the mineral and strategic materials facilities in Trona, CA, with images of the nearby Ruth Mine, loading operations onto trucks and railcars. In 1943, Yaden began an engineering and photographic.
