Printed in Great Britain by Robert Maclehose & Company Limited at the University Press, Glasgow. Dedicated to the memory of Sir Walter Raleigh 1861-1922. Preface by the Editor, Philip L. Barbour, dated September 1966. In December 1606, one hundred and twenty emigrants left London in three small vessels. They landed nearly five months later in Virginia and founded a settlement which they called Jamestown. Thus the first permanent English colony was established in America. In these two volumes Mr Barbour (the author/editor) has collected all the known documents relating to the Jamestown voyages during the life of the original charter. This collection gives a graphic and fascinating contemporary picture of the first few years of the colony out of which the United States was destined to grow. A truly fascinating account, well documented book and an interesting, informative view of the early history of these settlers.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible
4to. (1+2 =) 3 pp., in Arabic throughout. Includes one original addressed airmail envelope (printed Government of Ras-Al-Khaimah stationery). Two early, unique paper items from the Gulf Sheikhdoms: an official document from Sharjah witnessed by the ruler and a piece of private correspondence relating to the founding of a Ras Al-Khaimah government institution six years before independence. - 1) A power of attorney witnessed by the ruler of Sharjah, Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi (ruled 1924-51). The document certifies that Salim ibn Ibrahim al-Yusuf and Abd al-Rahman ibn Khalifa al-Yusuf appoint Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Rahim and Haji ibn Abd al-Rahim to collect the rent for their properties in Bahrain, replacing their previous agent Muhammad ibn Rashid al-Qassab. The document, signed by Salim al-Yusuf in the month Dhu al-Qa'dah 1362 AH, bears in its upper right corner the seal of the ruler of Sharjah with a handwritten note: "They testified in my presence / Sultan bin Saqr al-Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah and its Dependencies". With an eight-anna revenue stamp issued by the British Indian government and a stamp of attestation, certifying that the Sheikh's seal is authentic, dated 9 Feb. 1944 and signed by the Political Officer of the Trucial Coast, Maurice Patrick O'Connor Tandy (1912-86). Some browning and stains, edge tears and paper flaws (some with early repairs on verso). - 2) A two-page letter in blue ink, dated 7 March 1966, from Sami Abd al-Rahman Saqr, based at the Municipality in Ras al Khaimah, addressed to his friend Maher in Cairo. Sami Abd al-Rahman Saqr explains that when he returned to Ras al-Khaimah from his recent visit to Maher, the Sheikh [of Ras al-Khaimah, Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi] asked him to help establish the State Audit Institution. He writes that he has therefore now relinquished his position at the Municipality, adding that the institution will start small until the building is ready and discussing the plans for its further development. Sami Abd al-Rahman Saqr further mentions that he will travel to London in April on the first BOAC flight from Dubai to London, marking the launch of this new route. While the airline invited the Sheikh to travel on this inauguration flight, having provided him with a return ticket and expenses for a week's stay in London, the Sheikh is too busy to avail himself of this gift and is therefore sending Sami Abd al-Rahman Saqr on his behalf. He may extend his stay as long as two weeks to discuss business opportunities with British companies and offers to bring Maher anything from London that he may wish. Written on blue airmail stationery with printed letterhead; includes the airmail envelope.

None. Condition: None. Historically significant extensive archive of a famous German Egyptologist Heinrich Brugsch, a pioneer decipherer of the Demotic ancient Egyptian script and author of several fundamental works on ancient Egyptian history and hieroglyphs: "Grammaire demotique" (Berlin, 1855), "Histoire d'Égypte des les premiers temps de son existence jusqu'a nos jours" (Leipzig, 1859), "Hieroglypisch-demotisches Wörterbuch" (Leipzig, 1867-82, 7 vols.), "Geschichte Ägyptens unter den Pharaonen" (Leipzig, 1877), "Dictionnaire géographique de l'ancienne Égypte" (+ Supplement, Leipzig, 1879-1880), "Thesaurus inscriptionum aegyptiacarum" (Leipzig, 1883-91, 6 vols.), and others. The archive includes seven original manuscripts, apparently compiled in the course of Brugsch's work on several of his important publications. The Folio manuscript, titled "Les Nomes de la Haute-Egypte" (together with loosely inserted "Documents relatifs au nom des Hébreux") was most likely prepared during his work on the "Dictionnaire géographique de l'ancienne Egypte." The manuscript lists and explains the hieroglyphs defining 22 noms (administrative divisions) of Upper Egypt (Nubia, Apollinopolis, Eileithyiapolis, Diospolis, Coptus, Tentyra, Diospolites, &c.), same as in Brugsch's "Dictionnaire géographique?" (p. 15; see more ). Two manuscripts - "Beauten Ersten Ranges. Fonctionnaires de la Cour" and an untitled collection of 24 leaves with mounted printed Egyptian hieroglyphs and dense manuscript notes on the margins - were possibly compiled during Brugsch's work on his multi-volume "Thesaurus inscriptionum aegyptiacarum." The manuscripts contain extensive notes and commentaries on hieroglyphs, with the material in the "Beauten Ersten Ranges" seemingly organized in a vocabulary-like manner. Two notebooks with manuscript notes on the history of ancient Egypt in German and French, respectively, could have been prepared in the course of Brugsch's work on the "Histoire d'Égypte des les premiers temps de son existence jusqu'a nos jours" or its later German-language version "Geschichte Aegyptens unter den Pharaonen." One of the manuscripts (a fragment of a larger work with pages numbered from 41 to 98) contains complete chapters "IV. Chronologie de l'ère des Pharaons," "V. Le premier pharaon Mena et l'ancien empire," and " VI. Les successeurs de Mena." The archive also includes an early Brugsch's manuscript, titled "Handbuch fur allgemeinen Beredungen" (dated Cairo, 27 September 1864) with passages on hieroglyhs, and parallel notes in Greek, Hebrew and German; Brugsch's article "Über den Ursprung unserer Schriftzeichen" (About the origin of our writing system), from "Zeitschrift für Stenographie und Orthographie in wissenschaftlicher, pädagogischer and prakticher Beziehung" (Leipzig, 1864. Vo. XII, No. 3, pp. 70-79 [= 10 pp.); and a manuscript on the Babylonian-Assyrian cuineform script with Brugsch's extensive commentaries. The collection also contains a folder with over a dozen leaves of miscellaneous manuscript materials, including an autograph letter to "Herrn. Kais. Legationrath Prof. Dr. H. Brugsch-Pacha" from an Alexandria lawyer "Fr. von Dumreicher" (dated 2 March 1894), regarding the state of affairs of Brugsch's deceased son Alex (with the original envelope); a telegram from Brugsch's brother Emile (sent from Cairo in February 1894, likely on the same occasion); leaves with accounting of Brugsch's expenses (one dated "24.10.94"); a pencil-drawn plan of the Temple in Heliopolis; a pencil drawing of the famous Dendera Zodiac bas-relief, &c. There is also an eight-page offprint from "Zeitschrift für Assyriologie und Verwandte Gebiete" with P. Jensen's article, titled "Napahu = "aufleuchten," "wiedererscheinen" " (Leipzig, 1886, vol. 1. pp. 450-457). Overall, an important, extensive archive of original manuscripts by a famous 19th-century German Egyptologist, shedding light on the methods and scope of his research into Egyptian history and hieroglyphs. A list of larger manuscripts and Brugsch's magazine article: [BRUGSCH, H.
