His songs have enriched his life and his life has filled his songs with every emotion dear to the soul. But his deep understanding of sorrow and injustice have not spoiled a single note. He sings to enliven and encourage, to delight and tell tales. He snatches the riches of folksinging from as many sources as he can find and gives them freely and gladly to any audience that cares to listen. Decades of work and travel have made him famous but he remains forever in tune with the folk. He describes his friends and inspirations, his conflicts with the bosses and the government, his favorite songs, stories, and instruments, and the kind of learning that comes from listening carefully" ; Contents: Introduction -- Editor's note -- Part I : Old songs and new people -- A revival of interest in folk music? -- Two American musicians : Who showed us how to combine old and new -- Leadbelly -- Woody -- Some folk roots and protest traditions. One of the interesting points in this pamphlet was the statement that "only seventy-two per cent. of the gold produced was coined, or more than one-quarter of the gold produced in the United States was worth more for other purposes thatn it was for money. " The C…ompiler concludes this pamphlet with the conclusion that "gold has not only not appreciated when compared with labor, but it has depreciated. As gold can be procured for less labor it is no hardship for a debtor who borrowed gold years ago to pay the debt now in gold. " [Presumed to have been presented to the fair in Washington County, Maryland, which would make Hagerstown, MD the most logical publication location. It is recognized that there are several Washington County jurisdictions within the United States. Fair. No dust jacket as issued. Cover is worn, soiled, with tears and chips. Some page discoloration. Somewhat fragile.

1st Edition. First edition. 175 copies. 22pp. Three graph paper illustrations sewn through the pages. Original handmade paper covers with matching paper wrapper; title letter-pressed to front cover; a fine copy indeed. Inscribed by author to publisher Marion Boyars " 12.16.83 For Marion Boyars - w/ pleasure - Toby Olson". Beauti…fully produced with many small, lovely details, like the blind letter-pressed "colophon" across the colophon page, the thin line running along the bottom of all the pages and the way the long tails of the strings used to sew the graph paper illustrations to the page were left to dangle, evoking shooting stars. Book.
