Cet hippodrome est aujourd hui considéré comme l un des monuments de ce type les mieux conservés du monde romain. Par rapport à la ville antique, l édifice se trouvait hors les murs, dans une zone essentiellement occupée par une large nécropole remontant à l époque romano-byzantine. Sa façade principale, devancée par un aqueduc, donne sur la route antique qui menait à la cité. Cette route est chevauchée par un arc monumental qui définissait la limite de l aire urbaine. Long de 470 m, pour une largeur maximale de 125 m, l hippodrome occupe une surface totale de 54000 m2. Sa capacité maximale est d environ 36 500 personnes. Sa cavea présente une longue galerie surmontée par l étage d attique et donnant accès à une série de salles voûtées qui supportent les gradins. Ceux-ci sont accessibles à partir des portes placées à des intervalles réguliers dans les murs extérieurs de certaines de ces salles. Cependant, ce schéma fonctionnel s interrompt au niveau de la moitié sud de l hippodrome, où, pour des raisons qui semblent être financières, la galerie et l étage d attique sont remplacés par un mur continu qui fut ajouté ultérieurement. Une présentation générale du site et des divers monuments qui le composent est suivie d une étude détaillée de tous les aspects de l hippodrome. Son architecture et ses éléments architectoniques sont particulièrement décrits et analysés. Today, this hippodrome is considered one of the most well preserved monuments of its type in the roman world. Compared to the ancient city, this edifice was located extra-muros, in a zone which is essentially occupied by a large romano-byzantine necropolis. Its main façade, preceded by an aqueduct, overlooks the ancient road which leads to the city. This road is overlapped by a monumental arch which used to delimit to urban area. 470 m long and 125 m wide, the hippodrome occupies a total surface of 54000 m2. Its maximal capacity was of 36 500 persons. Its cavea presents a long gallery surmounted by the attic floor and gives access to a series of vaulted chambers which supported the tiers. Those are accessible from doors opened at regular intervals in the exterior wall of some of these chambers. However, this functional scheme is interrupted in the south half of the hippodrome where, for a supposed financial reason, the gallery and the attic floor are replaced by a continuous wall, added afterwards. A general presentation of the site and its different monuments is followed by a detailed study of all the aspects of the hippodrome. It deals with a set of monuments and structures that are interconnected and located in an extra-urban position: the ancient road in both Roman and Byzantine states, the monumental arch and the aqueduct. None of these monuments has been scientifically studied and no publication that is worthy of their archaeological value has been issued. Therefore, this book presents a work which its majority is original. The ancient road, which is uncovered over a length of 1200 m, is the backbone of the site. It has two distinct states: Roman and Byzantine. Moreover, it is bordered on both sides by a necropolis with dozens of funerary enclosures and monuments. Its Roman section is also bounded by dorcio-Tuscan colonnades, while its southern side is lined by an aqueduct that captures the sources of Ras al-Ain, located 5 km to the south of the city. This aqueduct that is extended to a 7 km length, has several sections, with some of which are well preserved. Their study identified the main technical aspects of the said monument.
