'In zijn onderhoudende en erudiete boek over de geschiedenis van de Homerische verhalen (en hun nawerking) tot in onze dagen, neemt Manguel de lezer mee op een tocht die van het oude Griekenland over Rome (Vergilius' Aeneïs) en Arabië (enige avonturen van Odysseus hebben hun weg gevonden in de verhalen over Sindbad de Zeeman) ten slotte de hele wereld rond voert, of op zijn minst toch tot in Buenos Aires, waar zijn landgenoot Jorge Luis Borges zich meer dan eens, zowel essayistisch als in zijn ficties, met Homerus heeft verstaan. (.) Beide heldendichten zijn natuurlijk oerverhalen: het leven als strijd, of het leven als een reis, dat appelleert aan iets heel wezenlijks in het menselijk gemoed. En er is de prachtige taal, die niet voor niets spreekwoordelijk is geworden ('Homerische vergelijking') en zelfs in gebrekkige vertalingen nooit helemaal kapot is te krijgen. Maar vooral, daar heeft Manguel helemaal gelijk in: 'Als je Homerus leest op een afstand van tweeënhalf millen-nium, maken bepaalde details in de gedichten ze op magische wijze concreet en worden ze teruggebracht tot iets waarmee we heel vertrouwd zijn, wordt het iets van onszelf.' De tragiek van de dood, die ook vijanden elkaar als gelijken doet herkennen in de Ilias , de eindeloos lijkende reis die ten slotte bekroond wordt door de definitieve, onverbreekbare hereniging van twee geliefden in de Odyssee: over nog eens 25 eeuwen zullen ze lezers nog precies zo aanspreken.
