Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 'Illustrated with numerous Engravings'. Quite a rare book. Take a look at the photos. Terrific condition considering that was published during the Civil War. There's a spot of loss at the right side of the front near the bottom edge. However, it doesn't stand out as the board underneath comes close to matching in color (1st photo). There's also some rippling of the cloth on the back cover, and a bit at the center bottom of the front. Now look how great the spine looks. How can the spine ends have held up so well? And only two corners have a tiny spot of rub-through. The gilt lettering on the front cover is actually bright. On the spine not as bright, but quite intact (not rubbed) along with the gilt design. The book is quite solidly bound, no issues there. And the pages are very good, some have light soiling, others don't. There's a pinprick in the margin of 36 pages. It doesn't seem to go through the paper in most. Perhaps a child long past pressed something sharp against the pages (see 5th photo). There's a small lightly penned name on the yellow end papers (which, btw, look terrific). Also a penciled word (juvenile) and an erasure above the word. And there's no other writing in the book. There's one tear at the corner of one page. This book was originally published in 1855.
