In 1993, he was selected by the literary magazine Granta as one of the 20 best young British writers, while his novel "Under the Frog" was featured on the Booker Prize shortlist. "Under the Frog" was also a winner of the 1992 Betty Trask Award and was the first debut novel to be shortlisted for the Booker Prize. The novel is a black comedy set in Hungary in the years immediately following the end of World War II and culminates in the 1956 uprising. Its protagonists are Gyuri, Pataki and several others, basketball players who dream of escaping their dead-end factory jobs, and travel to all their basketball gigs in the nude, even when this involves using public transport. The book especially parodies the trumpeting of the "gains of socialism" by the regime, empty rhetoric which, Fischer suggests, all but the dimmest were able to see through even from the beginning.' (Wiki)***'The Hungarians have an expression for the worst place in the world to be: 'under a frog's arse down a coalmine'. ***"A delicate seriocomic treasure---' - Salman Rushdie, The Independent on Sunday. ***'"Under The Frog" is the very witty and very sad account of two young men, Gyuri and Pataki, who survive the chaos of communism as part of a travelling basketball team. Set in Hungary, in the years leading to the revolution of October 1956, the story follows the fortunes of the team in pursuit of sex and the avoidance of work.' (Quotes taken from the first printed page) ***A signed copy of the author's debut novel. A lovely collector's copy. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Signed by Author(s).

This book was also short-listed for the Booker-Prize, the first-ever debut to be so-recognized. An uncorrected proof copy, signed by the author. A Very Good + paperback copy. I would describe the pages as Near-Fine in this instance, most wear is to the extremities. Slight rubbing on board extremities, board corners and page corners have slight wear. Slight foxing spots on front board and more pronounced staying or toning on back board. Nonetheless, still very-well preserved copy, and rare! Enjoy!
