They have some soiling, wear, and edgewear with bumped corners. The gray cloth backstrip has some wear. The endpapers have a little wear - the back endpaper has some soiling. Warne is actually the third published of this classic, followed by Rutledge (UK, 1878) & McLoughlin, (US, 1879.) This was printed somewhere between 1890 & the early 1920's. F. Warne was not in the habit of printing the edition data, copyright or printing date on most of their earlier pieces, however the binding type/style dates this book in that time period. Kate Greenaway, (illustrator). Under the Window by Kate Greenaway, published by George Routledge and Sons, is the book that launched Greenaway to international fame in 1878/1879. It revolutionized children's book illustration and even influenced Victorian children's fashion. ? The Publisher: Routledge was the original publisher (later editions were taken over by Frederick Warne). ? The Printing: These books were printed using woodblocks by the master printer Edmund Evans. The "children in white" and "brown border" you described are classic elements of his delicate color-layering process. ? The "Card Cover": This refers to the pictorial paper-covered boards. Because these were thin books intended for nursery use, the card covers and the spine are notoriously fragile. Condition Assessment Missing back endpaper and cracking to the binding at the back While a pristine First Edition can reach several hundred pounds, a copy with significant structural wear is valued as a "reference" or "filler" copy.
