The large color compositions extend Held's earlier geometric abstraction into complex, brightly colored, illusionistic spaces built from interlocking architectural and geometric forms. Curator David S. Rubin's accompanying essay places these works within Held's artistic development and discusses his working methods, drawing in part on a conversation with the artist. Rubin describes Held's labor-intensive process of developing ideas through watercolors, taping and painting the canvases in successive stages, and sanding away evidence of the artist's hand.
