Fremont, one of the United States's leading explorers of the nineteenth century, was relatively unknown in 1842, when he commanded the first of his expeditions to the uncharted West. But in only a few years, he was one of the most acclaimed people of the age~known as a wilderness explorer, bestselling writer, gallant army officer, and latter~day conquistador, who in 1846 began the United States's takeover of California from Mexico. He was not even forty years old when Americans began naming mountains and towns after him. He had perfect timing, exploring the West just as it captured the nation's attention. But the most important factor in his fame may have been the person who made it all possible: his wife, Jessie Benton Fremont. Jessie, the daughter of a United States senator who was deeply involved in the West, provided her husband with entree to the highest levels of government and media, and his career reached new heights only a few months after their elopement. During a time when women were allowed to make few choices for themselves, Jessie~who herself aspired to roles in exploration and politics~threw her skill and passion into promoting her husband. She worked to carefully edit and publicize his accounts of his travels, attracted talented young men to his circle, and lashed out at his enemies. She became her husband's political adviser, as well as a power player in her own right. In 1856, the famous couple strategized as John became the first~ever presidential nominee of the newly established Republican Party. With rare detail and in consummate style, Steve Inskeep tells the story of a couple whose joint ambitions and talents intertwined with those of the nascent United States itself. Taking advantage of expanding news media, aided by an increasingly literate public, the two linked their names to the three great national movements of the time~westward settlement, women's rights, and opposition to slavery. Together, John and Jessie Fremont took part in events that defined the country and gave rise to a new, more global America. Theirs is a surprisingly modern tale of ambition and fame; they lived in a time of social and technological disruption and divisive politics that foreshadowed our own. In Imperfect Union, as Inskeep navigates these deeply transformative years through Jessie and John's own union, he reveals how the Fremonts' adventures amount to nothing less than a tour of the early American soul.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Original publisher's dark blue cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine. "Mason Long, the Converted Gambler" printed on spine. 5 1/4" x 7 1/2." 256 pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning and small faint occasional spots or stains. Covers are ve…ry clean and intact except for slight darkening (more noticeable along spine) and slight bumping and wear to corners and head and tail of spine. A Very Good copy. This is the autobiography of Mason Long (1842-1903) who wrote about his life in the hopes that he might guide younger men to live a life far different from his own. He hopes to prevent them from falling into a life of iniquity like he did. However, Long's story is also one of redemption as he eventually quit gambling, became a temperance advocate, and converted to Christianity. Long writes unsparingly about his earlier life plagued by gambling and drinking addictions and participation in criminal enterprises. He takes an unflinching approach in recounting several parts of his life in which he had run-ins with the law and experienced great hardships. Long was born in Luray, Ohio. His father and mother both passed away by the time he was 10 years old. Long was then bonded as a slave for seven years to a wealthy farmer in Medina County, Ohio. Long says he ascribes his criminal lifestyle in adulthood to his experience as a slave to this farmer. He was forced to clear land and work on a sugar plantation with no pay and only little clothes and boarding in exchange for his excruciating workload. Long was also not allowed to see his relatives when they visited, and he describes an instance in which he was whipped in punishment for speaking briefly to one of them. Long was supposed to go to school for two months each year, but he says that in all of his seven years of bondage, he was only permitted to attend school for three months. Long describes finally being freed from bondage at the age of 17. He then became a self-employed farmer and later served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was introduced to gambling during his time in the Army which he says was a common pastime among soldiers and officers. After the war, Long became a businessman and operated his own general store selling groceries and provisions in Fort Wayne, Indiana. However, Long's participation in various forms of gambling eventually turned into a gambling addiction. He also developed a drinking addiction after seeking help for an unknown ailment affecting his heart from a doctor who ended up prescribing him whiskey as "medicine." Long then describes how his grocery business financially fell under and that he began to operate a "variety theater" which he said was his biggest regret in his life because he felt these types of theaters and "concert halls" attracted the worst types of people and were rife with iniquity. Long then describes committing his life to drinking and gambling. He became an owner of a saloon and gambling room and made significant profits but subsequently squandered his earnings on gambling and alcohol. Due to excessive drinking, Long said that he experienced tremors and episodes of persistent hallucinations, two of which were of white mice crawling all over him and a renegade stampede of bulls in relentless pursuit after him. Curiosity prompted Long to attend a temperance meeting in Fort Wayne, and after much introspection, he eventually signed a temperance pledge (Francis Murphy pledge card). Thereafter, Long made efforts to improve his life, become temperate, and cut ties with the gambling business. He also converted to Christianity and became involved in the temperance movement. Long also provides a chapter warning younger men to not give into the temptation of gambling and relays many anecdotes of gamblers were died early and penniless; he says that gambling may appear promising at first but only leads to financial and personal ruin.

Couverture souple. Condition: Bon. Edition originale.
