Spoof Boswell journal written by Lewis White Beck (1913-1997), Burbank Professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy at the University of Rochester, 1949-79. "At 20 min. before 1 (Mr Green held up his watch, for the Company to see Herr Kant s scrupulous Promptitude), Professour Kant came into the room. He bow'd, & addrest me in latin: 'Corsicorum libertatis amicus, said He, is allways wellcome at my Table.' He apoligised, that he could not speak english. He said, that we might speak french, if we were willing to leave Dr Beck out of our conversation, or continue in latin, if we deny'd ourselves the Pleasure of Mr Green's talk. He paused, for me to chuse the language. He was astonishd, when I ingratiatingly reply'd in german. I said, that I hoped his Hochwohlgebohrenheit would excuse my errours, as it has been many years, since I have spoke german, in an educated Company. Herr Kant was complimentitive of my Ease in what, he said, all the world regards as an uncouth language, not meet for elevated conversation, & Polite Learning. I enjoy'd that sudden Glory, wc comes to me, when I am superiour to a company in knowing their tongues, they not knowing mine.".

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Covers a little marked, corners rubbed. Some marginal markings and underscorings in the passages relating to Adolf Hitler (particularly the chapter entitled "'Hitler's Greatness'"). Summoned by his only brother, whom he hasn't seen for 54 years ("You will find a great change . . . I have eleven children, 2 boys and 9 girls and 84 grandchildren"), the author travels from South Africa to China, taking the ship to Southampton and Hamburg, and then travelling mainly overland. "Greatness is based on selflessness," he reflects. "Does Hitler answer to this description? For fiive [sic] consecutive years 1932-1937 he has solved the unemployment problem amongst eighty million Germans. He works 18 hours a day and sleeps six and soundly. Perhaps the most formidable charge against the Fuhrer [he continues] is the persecution of the Jews. He maintained the Jews were responsible for the Great War 1914-1918, and that they got all the money as profiteers. He realised that Germany under the Treaty of Versailles was bounded by many Jewish countries. He believed that 'in doing much good he must needs do a little wrong.' . . . The Jewish children were denied their schools. This is a terrible indictment! It is the cherished wish of parents to nurture their children in joy and happiness. Being suddenly proclaimed outcasts the Jew both old and young keep within doors and are rarely seen. The poor Jews may be undersirable [sic] neighbours from a hygienic point of view. On the other hand they are most industrious, very pushing, almost aggressive. Born with the instinct of ownership they outstrip most others in business dealings." Bosman's route took him through Poland, Rumania, Turkey, Iraq, Persia, India and Singapore.
