Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Here is copy of "Mud, Mules, and Mountains" by Bill Mauldin, Issued in January 1944 at the height of the Italian Campaign of the United States Army in the Second World War. The book is signed by many soldiers who are some of the very individuals who inspired Mauldin's gritty portrayals, the signatures included the soldier's home addresses The book is dated on the cover in ink "July - 2- 44". Bill Mauldin was beloved by the thousands of infantry soldiers fighting in the Second World War. Especially was he appreciated because he was, as a soldier in the 45th Division, down in the mud, sharing the terrible situations along with his fellow soldiers. In "Mud, Mules, and Mountains", issued in January 1944, he depicted the heroism and hardships of the United States Army 's 45th Division, 179th Infantry Regiment (featuring the iconic Willy and Joe) . This consisted partly of the National Guard "Thunderbirds" mobilized for active duty in the Italian Campaign. This is an amazing historical relic, containing signatures from the troops that Mauldin depicted during the long campaign - troops from Mauldin's own Division. I imagine that some of these brave men never made it home. To be able to laugh and find the humor in the darkest times is an important thing. Bill Mauldin supplied that morale-boosting comic relief to the troops that surrounded him - for that alone he was a hero. It was his first book. These men all endured the same battles, and were closely bonded as only such a shared war experience can do. Keep in mind this book was published in Italy and distributed to the troops on the front line. The book has literally been through the war. TITLE : Mud, Mules, and Mountains - Cartoons of the A.E.F. in Italy AUTHOR - ILLUSTRATOR : Bill Mauldin (1921 - 2003) INTRODUCTION (Dated January 1944) : Ernie Pyle (1900 - 1945 - Killed in the Battle of Okinawa - This Introduction was one of the last things Pyle wrote.) IMPRINT : Not given [but : Stars and Stripes Naples Office, copyright : Bill Mauldin] PLACE : Naples, Italy DATE : 1944 EDITION : First Edition SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES : Contains 16 signatures of soldier's in Mauldin's 45th Division, 179th Infantry Regiment (mobilized National Guard "The Thunderbolts") PHYSICAL DETAILS : Comic book size paperback with numerous full-page drawings and small vignettes; unpaginated - 48 pages in all, including first and final leaves; has an Introduction (by Ernie Pyle); approximately 6 1/4" x 8 1/4", pictorial wraps, stapled (one staple). Printed on newsprint. The cover features a wrap-around depiction of troops leading mules over a precipitous mountain trail, done in pale green and deep blue. Here is a list of the soldiers who signed the book, I assume all from the same company - going through in order from front to back : Cpl Elmer J. Walters (signed on the title page - I am assuming he was the owner of this copy. William R. Forbes, Homing Oklahoma, The Osage Hill Alfred S. Patterson, Baldwin Michigan Ernest Sylvin, N. B. Mass. The central leaf fold has separated from the staple. The paper is toned, and there are various shallow creases and edge nicks. No overt tears. The various names are scattered through the book, all written in ink. Inked date on front cover is July - 1 - 44.
