Depicted are mountains, valleys, lakes, rivers, deserts, cities, towns, forts, railroads, etc. The two segments of the first transcontinental railroad meet at Promontory. To the west of the Great Salt Lake is a large uninhabited region called Great American, or Salt Lake Desert. This was the lake bottom of a much larger Great Salt Lake in ancient times. Way down in the lower right corner, all by itself, is Ojo del Alamo. No idea what it is. Much of this territory was unpopulated until the 20th. century. *** Sharp, clean image with bright colors. Map of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming Territories on verso. *** The sheet is approx. 17.25 inches high by 14.5 inches. The image is 14.75 inches high by 12 inches.

Original one-half leather, four raised bands, over marbled boards with matching marbled endpapers and page edges, lg 4to. Washington, 1855. The volume is a general report of the expedition, and reports on the geology, paleontology and botany. Various sections are by J. Torrey, A. Gray, J.W. Bailey, W. Blake and others. Some light browning to the text and plates. There is also some scattered foxing to parts of the text and plates. All the hand-colored plates are beautiful scenes of the West along the expedition route. Overall, a very good copy.

This antique map of Utah was produced by O.W. Gray as part of his "National Atlas" in 1884. Gray was involved in the production of Atlas' from ca. 1871 - 1886. We love his maps because of the wonderful hand coloring and attention to detail. This map measures 11.75 inches by 14.75 inches.
