Russell was an Irish poet, artist, and visionary known for his mystical paintings and writing, his close friendship with W. B. Yeats, as well as his associations with The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. As a young boy, Russell spent summers in Armagh where he began to experience supernatural visions, visions that would continue into adulthood. In 1891 he began contributing to publications such as Lucifer and The Irish Theosophist under his adopted pen-name A.E. Russell made significant contributions to the Irish Literary Revival, through his work as editor for journals The Irish Homestead and The Irish Statesman.
