Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Vanity Fair: A Novel Without a Hero by William Makepeace Thackeray ? edited with an introduction and notes by Geoffrey and Kathleen Tillotson. Houghton Mifflin Company / Riverside Press Cambridge, Boston, 1963 ? Riverside Editions B66 (Trade Paperback, $2.25 cover price) Book Condition : Very Good?. Octavo trade paperback in fuchsia and white pictorial wrappers; 666 pages plus appendix; 40 illustration plates drawn by the author. Covers with light edge wear, rubbing, tanning, and soiling; small lower front corner crease ? honest surface wear for a 62-year-old course paperback. Light spine creasing. Pages clean and unmarked with light uniform age-toning ? exceptionally clean for a heavily assigned academic text. No ownership markings, stamps, price stickers, or remainder marks, except 15cent mark on first page. Original $2.25 cover price stated. A sound and presentable copy. Edition / Printing Notes Houghton Mifflin Company / Riverside Press Cambridge, Boston; first published January 1, 1963; Riverside Editions B66; not stated, presumed first edition. Edited with an introduction and notes by Geoffrey and Kathleen Tillotson, University of London ? the authoritative scholarly edition of the text for the period, widely assigned in university courses throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Includes 40 illustration plates drawn by Thackeray himself; bibliography; xli pages of editorial apparatus including introduction and notes; 680 pages total. The Riverside Editions series was Houghton Mifflin's flagship scholarly paperback imprint for college courses ? a historically significant quality paperback series comparable in prestige to the Norton Critical Editions. A satirical epic of love and social adventure set during the Napoleonic Wars, Vanity Fair follows the trials and tribulations of two young women ? the charming and amoral Becky Sharp and the sweet, loyal Amelia Sedley ? as they navigate elopements and betrayals, fortunes made and lost, and battles both military and domestic. At its centre is one of the most unforgettable characters in nineteenth-century fiction ? Becky Sharp, a panoramic figure in Thackeray's masterpiece of English social satire. The Tillotson Riverside Edition is the standard scholarly text of this period, widely regarded as the most authoritative editorial treatment of the novel for classroom use, and includes Thackeray's own 40 illustrations alongside Geoffrey and Kathleen Tillotson's authoritative introduction and notes from the University of London. An exceptionally clean copy of a heavily assigned course text ? unmarked and unwritten throughout, which is genuinely rare in this format. Signed by Author(s).

2 volumes. LIMITED EDITION on of only 1500 hand-numbered copies SIGNED BY THE ILLUSTRATOR, JOHN AUSTEN. With twenty plates, inclusive of the frontispiece for each volume, by John Austen each is colour augmented by hand by the firm of Daniel Jacomet in Paris. Also with five roughly 1/3-page illustrations as headpieces and an illustration on each titlepage, all also by John Austen. 4tos, in the publisher's bindings of paper-covered boards backed in gilt lettered magenta buckram, the paper on the boards with an all over floral colour design by Albert Rutherston, this same design but with variations to the colours, is also used for the endpages, the flies, and for the included dustjackets, which have gray paper labels on the spines and front covers printed in black. xx, 365vii, 367-772, [1] pp. The volumes are very fine, essentially as mint and in excellent condition, the jackets are fresh and fine and very attractive with just a little bit of edge wear, quite minor. THACKERAY'S MOST FAMOUS NOVEL, AND ONE OF THE GREAT WORKS OF THE 19TH CENTURY, FINELY PRODUCED IN LIMITED EDITION AND SIGNED BY THE ILLUSTRATOR. For this entry in the L.E.C. George Macy chose Dr. John Johnson, the printer for Oxford Univisity, to design it and oversee the production. It is the first of several that would be done in a near identical format. It is also the first of several books for the L.E.C. that employed the talent of artist John Austen; the later books being The Pickwick Papers in 1933, The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle in 1935, The Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillane in 1937, and The Old Wives' Tale in 1941. John Austen's fanciful line drawings are especially well suited for VANITY FAIR. The restrained and subtle use of colour is just right for them, brightening them up but never enough to make them gaudy. George Macy himself stated concern that many would deface these volumes by slicing out the pictures to frame. These volumes were printed by Dr. Johnson on paper specially made for them at the Arches mill in France, it is snowy white and thus a good complement to the gentle use of colour in the illustrations. The type used is a Baskerville monotype in a bold and easy to read 14 point size.

In the summer of 1843, Tauchnitz presented one of the earliest copyright proposals, which was initially accepted by G.P.R. James, Bulwer Lytton, and Lady Blessington and later by Charles Dickens, Benjamin Disraeli, Ainsworth, Samuel Warren and Captain Marryat. They published English language literature for distribution on the European continent outside Great Britain, including initial serial publications of novels by Charles Dickens. Though copyright protection did not exist between nations in the 19th century, Tauchnitz paid the authors for the works they published, and agreed to limit their sales of English-language books to the European continent, as authors like Dickens or Bulwer-Lytton had separate arrangements for publication and sale in Great Britain. Vanity Fair follows the lives of Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley amid their friends and families during and after the Napoleonic Wars. It is sometimes considered the "principal founder" of the Victorian domestic novel. The story is framed as a puppet play, and the narrator, despite being an authorial voice, is somewhat unreliable. The serial was a popular and critical success; the novel is now considered a classic and has inspired several audio, film, and television adaptations. - wiki. Deluxe Edition Limited to 350 copies of which this is Number 164 SIGNED by Baumer.
