Signed by the illustrator John Austen on the limited edition page. There are a total of 20 partially tinted, full page illustrations including frontispieces for both volumes. Near fine books in rare, very good plus dust jackets. Decorative paper covered boards with maroon cloth on spines; gilt lettering and graphics stamped on spine. Boards are clean. Spines are sunned, more so along the edges at head and tail of board spines, edges are creased; the tail of Volume 1 is split. External fore- and lower-edges are deckled. End papers are the same pattern as that of the dust jackets and board coverings. Books are internally clean and text blocks are tight. Dust jackets are the same decorative print as the board covers and end papers. With Limited Edition Club book plates in the front panels and paper labels on spines. Spines are sunned. Edges at head and tail of jacket spine are chipped and rubbed. Volume I has loss across the head of up to 3/16"; loss across the tail edge is 3/4" by up to 1/2". THACKERAY'S MOST FAMOUS NOVEL, AND ONE OF THE GREAT WORKS OF THE 19TH CENTURY, FINELY PRODUCED IN LIMITED EDITION AND SIGNED BY THE ILLUSTRATOR. For this entry in the L.E.C. George Macy chose Dr. John Johnson, the printer for Oxford Univisity, to design it and oversee the production. It is the first of several that would be done in a near identical format. It is also the first of several books for the L.E.C. that employed the talent of artist John Austen; the later books being The Pickwick Papers in 1933, The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle in 1935, The Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillane in 1937, and The Old Wives' Tale in 1941. John Austen's fanciful line drawings are especially well suited for VANITY FAIR. The restrained and subtle use of colour is just right for them, brightening them up but never enough to make them gaudy. George Macy himself stated concern that many would deface these volumes by slicing out the pictures to frame. These volumes were printed by Dr. Johnson on paper specially made for them at the Arches mill in France, it is snowy white and thus a good complement to the gentle use of colour in the illustrations. The type used is a Baskerville monotype in a bold and easy to read 14 point size.

Copyright Edition for Europe. Tauchnitz was the name of a family of German printers and publishers. In the summer of 1843, Tauchnitz presented one of the earliest copyright proposals, which was initially accepted by G.P.R. James, Bulwer Lytton, and Lady Blessington and later by Charles Dickens, Benjamin Disraeli, Ainsworth, Samuel Warren and Captain Marryat. They published English language literature for distribution on the European continent outside Great Britain, including initial serial publications of novels by Charles Dickens. Though copyright protection did not exist between nations in the 19th century, Tauchnitz paid the authors for the works they published, and agreed to limit their sales of English-language books to the European continent, as authors like Dickens or Bulwer-Lytton had separate arrangements for publication and sale in Great Britain.
