An oriental fantasy with a Gothic tinge originally published in 1786 - the tale of the 18th century Caliph Vathek who renounces Islam in order to indulge in various depraved practices to obtain supernatural powers. After years of corruption, he eventually inherits a kingdom in Hell. William Beckford (1760-1844) was a wealthy writer, politician and art critic, perhaps best know for building Fonthill Abbey, also known as Beckford's Folly. The abbey was built between 1796 and 1813. It was a Gothic Revival mansion with a huge tower that collapsed several times. The house was eventually demolished.
