First edition, signed by the author on the front free endpaper. This arts and crafts tract by "the mother of English hand-weaving" presents 10 chapters of recipes, each devoted to a different colour, which demonstrate her mastery of botany and chemistry. The work is an early printing by the Hampshire House Workshops private pres…s, the predecessor to the Saint Dominic's Press. The manual ran to nine editions, and the artist and publisher Douglas Pepler considered the title page "the best he had ever composed" (Coatts, p. 43). Margot Coatts, A Weaver's Life: Ethel Mairet 1872-1952, 1983. Octavo (186 x 126 mm). Woodcut at rear, red initial, engraved tailpiece; 3 pp. publisher's advertisements at rear. Contemporary red sheep, flat spine and covers ruled in blind, spine lettered in gilt. Occasional pencil annotations of an engaged user. Spine browned and lightly worn at head, covers a little marked, endpapers browned, contents otherwise clean. A very good copy.
