Diplômé de l école d architecture de Belgrade en 1960, il s oriente vers la peinture et réalise sa première exposition personnelle en 1963. Il obtient en 1965 le prix de la Biennale de Paris, ville où il s installe l année suivante et où il vit et travaille aujourd hui encore. Il est révélé dès 1967 par une exposition à la galerie du Dragon et apparaît aussitôt comme un des artistes les plus importants du mouvement de la Figuration narrative. Nommé en 1983 Professeur à l Ecole nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, Vladimir Velickovic y a enseigné pendant dix-huit années. Il est membre de l Académie des Beaux-Arts. Témoin, dans son enfance, des atrocités commises par les nazis en Yougoslavie, Vladimir Velickovic exprime, par la peinture, la douleur et la violence de cette mémoire. Dans les années 1960, il aborde les thèmes qui figureront de manière récurrente dans son uvre. Il peint des hommes ou des animaux (le plus souvent des rats ou des chiens) dont les corps sont confrontés à des situations dramatiques et terrorisantes. A partir des années 1970, il réalise des séries de peintures et de dessins inspirées des photographies du photographe anglo-américain, du XIXe siècle, Eadweard Muybridge. Il s agit d oeuvres inspirées par le mouvement, le déplacement ou la répétition : séries des « Descentes » [1989 1991] et des «Crochets » [1983 1991].
