Nestled into the background is Iron Bridge (now Bow Bridge). Original fold lines from time of issue. David Thomas Valentine (1801-1869) served as the Deputy to the Clerk of the Common Council for thirty-seven years and began publishing the "Manual for the Corporation of the City of New York" in 1841. The Manuals were directories of extensive historical and contemporary records of New York that included facts about the City of New York, city history, city council information, and reported on the progress of public works such as Central Park. Water stain at bottom left, just extending onto the image. The bottom right corner is chipped off. The image, clearly taken during the winter, shows a man in an overcoat and hat standing on a bridge with two small children sitting on the left side of the bridge. Another man is visible, but shadowed, on the bridge. There are manuscript notes with names of the family at the left. Only one structure is visible, a house largely obscured at the far right. This image was likely taken before 1898 when the Bronx was still in Westchester County. The only identification is a blind stamp in the mounting stock for Edward Bierstadt's studio at the lower right.…
