Accordion. Condition: VG+. First Thus. A quite scarce and nice early view book, undated circa 1880/1890 with 45 (several small inserts) of views of those areas in the Whites. The boards are decent with the FC a bit rubbed/soiled with ends and corners mildly worn, contents (old moisture staining to the center hinge area on several images) are clean and VG+ to near fine. The rear hinge was left loose by the publisher so that the entire book of illustrations could be laid out on a table and seen all at the same time. The overall contents are about Fine with 1 small paper-pull to the upper left-hand corner of the illustration inside front cover (Chocorua Mountain and Lake), . 6" x 5". Dark Mauve (Purple Maroon) bds with blind-stamped decorations and titles in gilt, quite bright and glossy. One of a series by Charles Frey. NOTE: Although they are generally referred to as "photo-views", the pictures in these small, popular albums were not photographs at all but another image type entirely that became known as the 'Glaser/Frey lithographic process'. Printed with stone, in a multi-pass process they displayed a range of tones not possible with ordinary lithographic printing. When covered with varnish, the pictures looked as if they had been printed in an emulsion with a striking and bold three-dimensional effect, similar a photograph. Printed predominantly in Leipzig, Germany by Louis Glaser and distributed by Skillings & Howard, Portland, ME, Chicholm Brothers, Portland, ME, Adolph Witteman & Brothers of New York City. et al.
