Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Scarce photo-historical document. Gilt-stamped maroon bonded boards with blue cloth spine. Back cover has wide scratch; some edge wear. Oblong format: 6.75 x 9.25 inches. 58 pp. 25 b&w photo plates. Historical photos from Dutch tobacco plantation or plantations in the Deli region of…Sumatra circa 1901. This was a complimentary photo album published by the Dutch and American tobacco import company F. & E. Cranz. The book was distributed to wholesale partners "to retain & gain the confidence of the trade by fair & square dealing." And yet, such mercantile boosterism is undercut by the photos themselves, which document the harsh labor conditions and environmental destruction associated with extractive colonial industries in the last stages of European imperialism.
