From dust jacket: For prize-winning photographer John Moran, the act of photography is about "being in love with where you are." Journal of light caps his twenty-year odyssey to discover the soul of one of the most photographed states in the country. Moran has sought a vision of natural Florida as it must have appeared to Ponce de Leon and other early strangers in paradise. This collection brings together some of his best-known and favorite images. Companion essays reflect Moran's philosophy about both nature and photography, weaving together personal narrative, natural history, and photo-technical instruction. They include commentary about the actual moment he snapped each picture, factual information about the place, and sometimes a historical perspective on the setting by such well-known writers and naturalists as William Bartram and Archie Carr. A tribute to what so many have called paradise, Journal of Light is a celebration of Florida's wild side, connecting us to the possiblities found in land, water, and sky. Hardcover. Gore, Tipper (Photographer) (illustrator). Sewn binding. Cloth over boards. [8], 151, [1] p. Illustrations (many in color). Annotated with spirited captions, these evocative and powerful photos, taken by Tipper Gore over the last four years, capture the images that matter most to her--as wife and mother, as a tireless worker for charitible causes, and as an ambassador-at-large for the Clinton-Gore administration. Sales proceeds will benefit the National Health Care for the Homeless Council, Inc. 127 photos, 87 in color. From Wikipedia: "Mary Elizabeth "Tipper" Gore (nee Aitcheson; born August 19, 1948) is an author, photographer, former second lady of the United States, and the wife of Al Gore, from whom she is currently separated. She became well known for her role in the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC), criticizing music with profane language and promoting Parental Advisory stickers (nicknamed "Tipper Stickers") on record covers, especially in the heavy metal, punk and hip hop genres. Born Mary Elizabeth Aitcheson in Washington, D.C., Tipper Gore is the daughter of John Kenneth "Jack" Aitcheson, Jr., a plumbing-supply entrepreneur, and his first wife, Margaret Ann (nee Carlson) Odom (who lost her first husband during World War II). Her nickname, Tipper, derives from the lullaby "Tippy, Tippy, Tin", originally sung in the 1940 Our Gang short All About Hash by child actress Janet Burston. Her ancestry includes English, Scottish, German, and Swedish. Gore grew up in Arlington, Virginia. Her parents divorced and she was raised by her mother and grandmother. She attended St. Agnes (now St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School), a private Episcopal school in Alexandria, Virginia, where she excelled in athletics and played the drums for an all-girl band, The Wildcats. She met Gore at his senior prom in 1965. Although she came to the prom with one of his classmates, Gore and Tipper began to date immediately afterwards. When Gore began attending Harvard University, she enrolled in Garland Junior College (now part of Simmons College) and later transferred to Boston University, receiving her B.A. in psychology in 1970. Gore pursued a master's degree in psychology from George Peabody College, graduating in 1975. She then worked part-time as a newspaper photographer until her husband was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1976. In 1982, she resumed her photography career, working part-time for Quarante Magazine (1982 1985) published by Kathleen Katz of Arlington. On May 19, 1970, she and Gore were married at the Washington National Cathedral. She has four children: Karenna Aitcheson Gore Schiff (born on August 6, 1973), Kristin Carlson Gore (born on June 5, 1977), Sarah LaFon Gore (born on January 7, 1979), and Albert Gore III (born on October 19, 1982). A longtime family friend of Al and Tipper Gore confirmed on June 1, 2010, that the Gores had sent out an e-mail to family friends announcing that they had made a mutual decision to separate. Gore was targeted by the rock group Warrant on their 1990 album Cherry Pie in the track Ode to Tipper Gore, which was basically a collection of swear words and sexual references, due to her involvement with the Parents Music Resource Center. In 1985, Tipper Gore co-founded the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) with Susan Baker, wife of then United States Secretary of the Treasury James Baker, because Tipper heard her then 11-year-old daughter playing "Darling Nikki" by Prince. According to an article by NPR, Gore went "before Congress to urge warning labels for records marketed to children." Gore explained that her purpose wasn't to put a "gag" on music but, to keep it safe for younger listeners. A number of individuals including Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys, John Denver, Joey Ramone, and Frank Zappa criticized the group, arguing that it was a form of censorship. In response, NPR further stated that according to Gore, she "wasn't out to censor the objectionable material" and quoted her as stating that she is "a.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Tipper Gore (Photographer) and others. (illustrator). First Edition. First Printing. 10.5" x 8.5", 151 pages. Profusely illustrated with 120 color and black-and-white photographs. Inscribed by the author. Tipper Gore was an experienced photojournalist long before she took up residence in D.C. This "diary" is a compilation of pictures taken during the first four years of the Clinton-Gore administration. They run the gamut from unusually intimate coverage of White House activities to a variety of people and places she has experienced in her recent international travels. Gore reveals a keen eye for "the defining moment"--especially in her photographs of Rwandan and Haitian children. A frank assessment of how being part of a presidential administration has affected the author's children, her marriage, and her daily life. Mary Elizabeth "Tipper" Gore (née Aitcheson; born August 19, 1948) is an American author, photographer, and social issues advocate who was the wife of Al Gore, the 45th Vice President of the United States. Gore worked part-time as a newspaper photographer for Nashville's The Tennessean and continued as a freelance photographer in Washington after her husband was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1976. Gore rose to prominence for her work with the Parents Music Resource Center, voicing strong opinions and advocating censorship, for the labeling of record covers of releases featuring profanity especially in the heavy metal, punk and hip hop genres. She has advocated for mental health, homelessness, women and children. Tipper Gore has been a passionate photographer for many years, but when her husband was elected Vice President of the United States, she began taking more pictures than ever before. Now, in this beautiful and very personal book, Mrs. Gore uses both words and photographs to give us an intimate view of her new life at home, her work as a member of the current administration, and her travels around the world. In a lively introductory chapter, Mrs. Gore offers a wonderfully candid self-portrait. She tells the story of how she became a photographer--receiving her first camera as a gift from her husband, Al, working as a photojournalist for The Tennessean, and gradually discovering that she expresses herself best through the images she captures on film. She writes about the causes that she has cared about most, especially those involving the mentally ill and the homeless. And, with surprising frankness, she describes how being part of a presidential administration has affected her children, her marriage, and her daily life. The centerpiece of Picture This is an inspired collection of more than 120 of her recent photographs, both color and black and white. Mrs. Gore has an unusual gift for catching people at their most natural--witness her photographs of the President and Vice President at work, of men and women from a rich diversity of cultures, and of her husband and children during private moments. She has a keen eye for pictures that tell dramatic stories, as illustrated by her eloquent photographs of starving children in Rwanda and homeless people in America. This fascinating visual diary of Tipper Gore's past four years is remarkable for its freshness, its candor, and its spirit. As warm and appealing as the author herself, Picture This provides a revealing look into the private world of a much admired public woman.
