Octavo, original cloth with gilt titles, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, tissue-guarded frontispiece. In very good condition with rubbing and bumping to the extremities, a few small losses to the front free endpaper, and toning. Exceptionally rare. Anna Julia Cooper (1858â"1964) was a pioneering African American scholar, educator, and activist whose work laid foundational groundwork for Black feminist thought in the United States. She spent her early years in Raleigh, NC, graduated from Oberlin College in 1884, and earned a master's degree in mathematics there four years later - one of the first two Black women in America to earn the M.A. Best known for her 1892 book A Voice from the South: By a Black Woman of the South, Cooper articulated a powerful vision of social justice, emphasizing the importance of education, intellectual development, and civic engagement for African American women. Her writings challenge both racial and gender hierarchies, asserting that the uplift of Black women is essential to the progress of the entire nation. Cooperâs life and work exemplify a deep commitment to academic excellence and social advocacyâ"she earned a Ph.D. from the University of Paris-Sorbonne in 1924, becoming one of the first Black women in the world to do so.
