Add to basketFirst edition. 181pp, [3]. Printed in double columns. Uncut in original publisher's powder blue paper boards, recently rebacked. Boards rubbed and marked. Scattered spotting. The sole edition of an incongruous selection of letters, articles, and addresses on such diverse subjects as road building, farming, and parliamentary reform, by Yorkshire-based collier Richard Milnes. The sundry articles, many of which originally submitted to the Leeds Mercury, were compiled, according to Milnes in his prefatory biography 'hoping it to may be of use to young men of the rising generation, to guard merit and innocence against error, prejudice, weakness, falsehood, wickedness, and treachery'; the author himself having been 'twice compelled to submit to a bankruptcy' due to 'putting his hand a little too far'. Milnes regards multifarious subjects, from the tithe system of Ireland, to 'reasons why the Roman Catholic religion should be abandoned', and 'An account of the seams of Coal in those Islands, supposed to extend through them all and into the Sea, to Frankland and the Isles of Man, shewing that the Coal is not likely to be exhausted in thousands of years to come'. Add to basket4to, pp. [iv], 32; old library stamps (of the Mercantile Library, Philadelphia) on occasional pages throughout, otherwise a good copy, complete with half title, in old marbled boards, rebacked with library buckram. First edition, and a presentation copy from the author, apparently to Miss Craufurd - the inscription on the half title has been cropped, but enough remains for the name to be made out with reasonable certainty. The poem is effectively a blank verse tirade against Byron, although neither he nor any of the other 'infidel' poets is actually named. Turnour wrote another similar poem entitled The Druid's Song, subtitled 'A Christmas appeal to my country against infidel writers', published in 1823. This rare poem is located by Copac at four libraries in the UK (BL, Bodleian, Cambridge and NLS); WorldCat adds a copy at Yale. Not in Jackson, Annals of English verse; Chew, Byron in England, pp. 106-7.

First edition. First edition. Complete in four volumes. viii, 580; iv, 551, [1]; iv, 571, [1]; [4], 69, [3] pp. With five folding maps or plans, on linen and partly in color. Bound in publisher's brown ribbed embossed cloth, spines gilt, pale yellow endpapers. Presented in cool custom fitted black half-morocco box, spine lettered in gilt, raised bands. Good condition overall: cloth worn along edges with some small tears, hinges weak, spines darkened. Rear board of first volume detached. Internally better, bright and clean, with a single plate loose. From the collection of actor and comedian Robin Williams. Scarce, with only eight copies found in OCLC/WorldCat and none in commerce-- especially so with appendix volume. A classic apocalyptic treatise foretelling the doom of the world. In 1863 authorship was attributed to a Mr. Beale, "a Master of Arts at the University of Cambridge" by M. Baxter (see McIver The End of the World: An Annotated Bibliography 334). It examines political and international signs of the times (earthquakes, the Crimean War, the comet), and remarks on their similarities with those that preceded the destruction of Jerusalem. Harkening back to the failed revolutions of 1848 the author decries atheism, communism, socialism, and "red republicanism" as instruments of Satan. A fascinating, sweeping attempt to link biblical history with the end of the world. The folding maps include "The Seats of the Lost Ten Tribes," "Jerusalem and its Environs," "The Land of Israel According to the Covenant with Abraham," "The Ground Plan of the Temple of Ezekiel," and "The Holy Oblation." Halkett Dictionary of Anonymous and Pseudonymous English Literature p. 140.
