Francis Hargrave (c.1741-1821) was the most prominent of the five advocates who appeared on behalf of James Somerset in the case which determined, in 1772, the legal status of slaves in England. Having established his reputation, Hargrave thereafter concentrated on works of legal history and commentary, including this collection of "state -trials" - heavily based on the work of previous editors. "Although it mainly covered trials for treason and other political offences since 1163, the scope of the series was wider, including cases of murder or even sexual scandal where there was some wider political significance. The series was for many years the main source of information about the history of criminal procedure and evidence. It also played an important role in the political education. In the eighteenth century it was conceived as a manual of how to defend liberty against state oppression. To the Victorians it was a record of liberties achieved in the areas of trial by jury and parliamentary democracy." (Lindsay Farmer, 'State Trials' in The New Oxford Companion to Law, 2008" Several volumes have the armorial bookplate of John Barton. Volumes 2, 4, 8, 9 and 11 have their front board detached (sometimes with the front free endpaper). Covers rubbed and worn with loss of spine-titling and some scrapes to leather. Contents Good with occasional scattered light foxing.
