Illustrated dust jacket lettered white, blue and yellow. Book plate of Gordon Newbury. Presentation copy: 'Evy [Featherstone-Witty] and Gordon with much true affection Jon.' Typed signed air letter with handwritten address of the recipient Mrs Evy Newbury, 51 Cadogan Square, London SW1X 0HY England and Cleary's handwritten address of 71 Upper Pitt St, Kirribilli, NSW 2061 dated January 27 postmarked 1990 and consisting of about 660 words in which he discusses the gales in England, Australia's glorious weather, his daughter's pregnancy, a trip to England they might postpone, Ava Gardner's death and his dislike for Meryl Streep and the wait for the Scobie Malone launch on television which would be frustrating, if he let it be. Another typed letter to Evy Newbury from Cleary loosely inserted (address as above) dated March 25 [1990] consisting of about 1,330 words in which he says they will not be travelling abroad due to the baby's arrival. They might come at a later date. He discusses the difficulties that small businesses are experiencing and the Federal election which was a 'dull, dull campaign.' He says he has just delivered a new MSS. ahead of schedule and now needs to recharge his batteries. He is going to continue with the Scobie Malone books, sales are increasing with each one he writes and he likes writing about him. He says crime in Sydney has become really vicious. 'My contacts in the NSW police force tell me some hair-raising stories about crime and corruption Ğ but have advised me not to write them.' He writes about family matters, his wife's health, his grandchild, and the death of his daughter Jane. He moves on to recent films he has seen and how he helped his nephew Peter James (Australian cinematographer/director of photography) get into the film business. Herta Evy Newbury previously Featherstone-Witty (1921 Ğ 2011) socialite and interior designer committed suicide at the age of 90. Jon Stephen Cleary (1917 Ğ 2010) was a prolific and very popular Australian author whose work included 'The Sundowners' which became a film like many of his books starring Deborah Kerr and Robert Mitchum and a series of detective fiction featuring Det. Scobie Malone. 'Vortex' is about a tornado attack on a small Missouri town. Cleary wrote a screenplay but a film was never made.
