Paperback. Condition: NEUF.

Vesuvius, and various festivals), works of art, etc.; decorative vignettes; maps and plans; engraved dedication. The "Voyage Pittoresque" was one of the most celebrated illustrated books of the eighteenth century. For the genesis of the project, see Antony Griffiths, "The Contract between Laborde and Saint-Non for the Voyage Pittoresque de Naples et de Sicile", Print Quarterly, Vol. 5, No. 4 (December 1988), pp. 408-414. The text for the four volumes in the series was published between 1781 and 1786; the plates were issued in livraisons from March 1778 onwards.JIoli Vingopoulou: Jean-Claude Richard, abbé de Saint-Non (1727-1791) was a French clergyman, engraver and painter. He was exiled from Paris for political reasons and lived from then onwards in Poitiers. EventuAlly, he made the choice to devote himself to his artistic interests (art, archaeology and music), and thus resigned from his public office as a judge. After 1759 Saint-Non lived in England for some time, and later moved to Italy (1759-1761). He traveled to Naples and Sicily with painter Fragonard and H. Robert. He released first his drawings of the monuments of Rome, which soon won over the public; thus, in 1777 he was able to publish his account and drawings of the ?enchanting? journey to Magna Graecia. After ensuring financial support from sponsors, he prepared this five-volume work with enthusiasm, in spite of the difficulties which arose (1781-1786). The chronicle is comprised of Saint-Non's texts (a review of the history of Southern Italy and studies on Naples, Pompey, Herculanum and their neighbouring areas), and the corresponding plates.

/// Paris, Houdaille, Libraire-Éditeur, 1836.4 volumes 8vo and 2 folio atlases; (2)-LXXIX-460 pp. / (2)-587 pp. / (2)-522 pp. / (2)-614 pp., the atlases are composed by: [Naples]-1 large title-page, 285 engravings, maps, figures[1-285] / [Grande Grèce]-1 large title-page-273 engravings, maps, figures [286-558 and last], blue half-shagreen, ribbed spines beautifully decorated, gilt fillets and panels, gilt title. Uniform contemporary binding, superb copy. --- Very rare complete third edition (Paris, Dufour & Cie, 1829, for the second edition) illustrated with 558 engravings.Missing from Cicognara, Cremonini and numerous bibliographies on the subject.Blanc, 957 (for the edition of 1829); Quérard, French Literature, t. VIII, p. 360.The additions made to this edition by Charrin are: a chapter containing the description of the Etruscans, historical and geographical notes, a detailed analysis of the work, a biographical notice on Richard de Saint-Non and 141 additional plates of which 27 in color about the Etruscans. During a journey in the Two Sicilies, while his companions took the measurements of the temples and accumulated the sketches, Denon composed on paper a travel journey with a remarkable style, which he communicated to the abbot of Saint-Non. This journal, associated to pages of Chamfort, Cabanis, Faujas de Saint-Fond, Dolomieu, and other fine quills, would form the text material of the Voyage pittoresque, but the great merit of this monumental work resides less in the text than in the exceptional engravings perfectly executed. "Saint-Non (1727-1791), better known as the Abbé de Saint-Non, was a French engraver, designer, archaeologist and traveller. In this Age of Enlightenment, he rubbed enlightened shoulders with Rousseau and U.S. ambassador, Benjamin Franklin. He was an avid participant in and chronicler of the Grand Tour. In 1759 Saint-Non awraded himself a dispensation from his duties as a deacon and lawyer and went, in the company of the painters.

He produced a series of collections of engravings as a result and, encouraged by the success of these, in 1777 he planned the far more ambitious account of his travels in Southern Italy. Although he already had much material, it needed to be supplemented with more contemporary accounts and illustrations of the eruption of Vesuvius etc. An expedition was sent through Naples and Sicily under Denon whilst Saint-Non remained in France to supervise the production of the prints and to organize the material for publication. The work was arranged in narrative style freely borrowing from D'Hancarville, Hamilton and others for additional material. Some of the most important illustrators of the time were used including Cochin and Saint-Aubin. Throughout the work Saint-Non strove to maintain the interest of his subscribers by making the work entertaining, often including popular spectacles at the expense of more worthy historical material. "The completed work is one of the most beautiful that a private person has ever produced, and it is unparalleled among the sumptuous publications. The ambitious undertaking became the model for later "voyages pittoresques"." (Millard).
