Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Original cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. Colour & b.w illustrations. 160 pps. The Discovery was built for Captain Scott's first Antarctic expedition of 1901-04 and was launched one hundred years ago, in 1901, at Dundee. She had many roles before her final voyage back to Dundee in 1986, and this book tells the story of that chequered career. Despite numerous expeditions to the Antarctic waters during the 1800s, by the close of that century the continent itself remained a mysterious land mass. To remedy this the Royal Geographical Society proposed a National Antarctic Expedition and a purpose-built vessel, the Discovery, was specially designed. Based on a whaleship, she was massively built to withstand ice, and was equipped with a hoisting propeller and rudder. She set sail from Cowes on 6 August 1901, under the command of Captain Scott, and entered the Ross Sea in January. A sledging expedition, of Scott, Shackleton and Wilson reached within 500 miles of the South Pole. In 1905, a year after her return to Europe she was purchased by the Hudson Bay Company; she traded under charter throughout the First World War; was later sent to rescue Shackleton, marooned on Elephant Island; in 1925 she became a Royal Research Ship, and carried out surveys on whaling grounds; in 1929-31 she was used by Sir Edward Mawson to survey Australian Antarctic territory. She survived WWII and the postwar years and after restoration to her 1925 state returned to Dundee in 1986 where she is now a museum ship. This new and abridged edition of Ann Savours' earlier book portrays the voyages and describes the bravery of the explorers who sailed her into icebound waters, and with its many illustrations conjures up the lost world of wooden ships and Antarctic exploration.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Built in 1900 for Captain Scott's Antarctic expedition of 1901, Discovery's dramatic life spans a century of adventure, exploration and danger. This book portrays the heroism and determination of the explorers and scientist who sailed in her to meet the challenge of the unknown. Confronting the turbulent Southern ocean, or wintering inshore with Discovery locked in eight feet of ice, the stories of their struggles almost eclipses the importance of their pioneering works. Discovery's subsequent history was just as eventful. After her expedition to the Antarctic, the Hudson Bay company used her as its annual supply ship from London. During World War I she ferried vital food and supplies to the Atlantic ports of France, and in 1915 she made a hazardous voyage to Archangel in north Russia to transport munitions to the Eastern Front. In 1916 she was sent south once more in a dramatic bid by the Admiralty to rescue Shackleton's men, marooned on Elephant Island after the sinking of Endurance. She is now in Dundee, having been fully restored. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
